This Dutch Studio Just Built a Room Divider From Old T-Shirts

The Dutch design studio Luis Marie has introduced 'Plissade,' an innovative room divider that leverages the structural potential of textiles through advanced pleating techniques. Designers Fenna van der Klei and Patricio Nusselder were inspired by traditional fabric pleating, typically used for decorative purposes in clothing and curtains, but applied it to create a freestanding architectural element. Unlike conventional room dividers that rely on rigid frames or heavy materials, Plissade maintains its form and stability solely through engineered folds in the fabric. A key aspect of Plissade's design is its commitment to sustainability. The inner layer of the divider is made from felt derived from recycled post-consumer polyester clothing, offering a second life for discarded textiles like old t-shirts and jeans. The outer layer is crafted from woven textile produced from recycled polyester yarns. This material choice not only contributes to addressing textile waste but also aligns with contemporary demands for eco-conscious home furnishings. Beyond its structural integrity and sustainable composition, Plissade offers functional benefits, particularly in modern living and working environments. The pleated textile layers inherently possess acoustic properties, effectively absorbing sound. This feature makes Plissade highly suitable for open-plan spaces or home offices, where flexible sound management and the creation of acoustic privacy zones are increasingly important. The divider thus serves as a practical solution for enhancing comfort and concentration without resorting to permanent architectural changes. The aesthetic appeal of Plissade is another significant element. Luis Marie offers the room divider in a range of vibrant colors, creating dynamic optical illusions reminiscent of faceted gemstones. The interaction of light with the pleated surfaces produces a constantly changing visual effect depending on the viewer's angle, transforming a functional object into a captivating design piece. This visual dynamism elevates Plissade from a mere partition to a focal point within an interior space. Plissade challenges preconceived notions about the capabilities of textiles, demonstrating that fabric can be engineered to be structural, functional, and aesthetically striking simultaneously. It represents a fusion of traditional craft techniques with contemporary design challenges, offering an innovative approach to flexible space division, sound absorption, and sustainable material use in residential and commercial settings. The design encourages a reconsideration of material possibilities and the potential for ancient techniques to solve modern problems. #RoomDivider #TextileDesign #SustainableDesign #RecycledMaterials #AcousticPanel #InteriorDesign #DutchDesign #ProductInnovation #RoomDivider #TextileDesign #SustainableDesign #RecycledMaterials #AcousticPanel #InteriorDesign #DutchDesign #ProductInnovation
