colorful arches, hammocks and mirrors shape up modular installation in riga's dome square

Toms Kampars Studio unveiled "Dome Next Door," a modular installation in Riga's Dome Square, a UNESCO-listed site. The project, which debuted in summer 2024 and will return in 2025, reimagines the historical architectural elements of Riga's Old Town, specifically the medieval vaults and arched windows, into a contemporary, interactive social space. Positioned at the convergence of seven historic streets, the installation integrates modern design with the city's rich heritage, inviting both locals and tourists to engage with the environment. The core of the installation is a spruce modular GL timber grid, constructed from locally sourced and sustainable materials. This five-meter-tall timber framework is designed to align with the ground floor of Dome Square, providing both structural integrity and adaptability. The grid is composed of hundreds of prefabricated timber pieces, including 45 columns, 72 roof beams, 31 floor beams, 245 floor planks, and 6 wall CLT panels, which were assembled on-site in five days. This modular approach allows for flexible configurations and supports the diverse elements incorporated within the structure. Within this timber framework, four colorful steel modules introduce varied interactive experiences. These modules feature hammocks for relaxation, swings for playful engagement, reflective mirrors that offer new perspectives of the historic surroundings, and open spaces suitable for picnics or social gatherings. The design concept draws inspiration from the Dome Cathedral’s cloister, forming a central courtyard that encourages visitors to pause, reflect, and experience the historic site in novel ways. The interplay of colors from the steel modules against the natural timber creates a vibrant contrast within the ancient square. Custom-designed lighting enhances the installation during evening hours, illuminating the interactive elements and contributing to a welcoming ambiance after sunset. This thoughtful integration of lighting ensures that the space remains engaging and accessible throughout the day and into the night. The project was commissioned by the Riga City Council, underscoring a municipal effort to revitalize public spaces and foster community interaction while honoring historical context. The realization of Dome Next Door was a collaborative effort involving professionals from Latvia, Lithuania, Austria, and Portugal. Fabrication of the components relied on local companies specializing in steel, timber, and lighting, highlighting a commitment to local craftsmanship and resource utilization. The design team included Antonella Amesberger, Hori-Zonte, Jurgis Gečys, and Toms Kampars. The construction was managed by Artis Neilands, with materials supplied by Easywood for glued-laminated timber, Nordic CLT for cross-laminated timber, and Mad Metal Art & Decor Riga for steel. Those Guys Lighting handled the electricity and lighting, and structural engineering was provided by Ainārs Brižs of SIA Commodo. This international and local collaboration facilitated the successful execution of the complex, modular structure, emphasizing sustainability, adaptability, and community engagement. #ModularInstallation #RigaArchitecture #TomsKamparsStudio #PublicSpaceDesign #TimberConstruction #InteractiveArt #UrbanRenewal #CulturalHeritage #SustainableDesign #ModularInstallation #RigaArchitecture #TomsKamparsStudio #PublicSpaceDesign #TimberConstruction #InteractiveArt #UrbanRenewal #CulturalHeritage #SustainableDesign
