A Round and Around Home Renovation / HAMS and, Studio
The "A Round and Around Home Renovation" project by HAMS and, Studio, completed in 2024 in Japan, focused on transforming a 65 square meter residence. The design philosophy aimed to create a living space that seamlessly connects the interior and exterior, drawing a parallel between the act of reading a book and opening a window. This concept emphasizes a continuous flow and interaction within and beyond the home. The renovation was specifically designed for an architect who wished to integrate his personal collection of cherished items, accumulated over time, into his living environment, contrasting with contemporary trends that often favor non-ownership and minimalism.
The project prioritizes the integration of personal history and belongings into the architectural space. Instead of a minimalist approach, the design celebrates the architect's past and possessions, creating a home that reflects his unique journey and values. The 65 sqm area is efficiently utilized to accommodate these items and foster a sense of personal connection to the space. The renovation emphasizes functionality while also providing aesthetic appeal through thoughtful material selection and spatial organization.
Key materials used in the renovation include Ferrum+, Haymes Paint, Kvadrat, and TAJIMA ROOFING, indicating a focus on quality and specific design choices. The lead architects for the project were Yota Hokibara from HAMS and, Studio, and Ken Kazama, with ROOVICE handling the construction. The project is categorized under renovation and apartment interiors, reflecting its scope and context within a residential setting in Japan.
The photographs by Akira Nakamura visually capture the essence of the design, showcasing the interior spaces such as the dining room, kitchen, and areas with shelving. These images illustrate how different elements like tables, chairs, and windows are arranged to achieve the desired flow and aesthetic. The visual documentation, including floor plans, sections, and diagrams, further elaborates on the spatial relationships and structural modifications undertaken during the renovation. This detailed portrayal helps in understanding the design intent and its execution.
The project exemplifies a personalized approach to home renovation, moving beyond generic design trends to create a space deeply resonant with the occupant's identity. The integration of personal items and the creation of a fluid connection between indoor and outdoor environments are central to this design. The emphasis on carefully chosen materials and the collaboration of experienced architects and construction teams underscore the project's commitment to quality and unique architectural expression within a compact urban setting in Japan.
