This Armonk Home Renovation Is Ideal for Entertaining
An Armonk couple, facing an empty nest, chose to renovate their shingle-style house instead of downsizing, aiming to transform it into a vibrant space suitable for entertaining. They engaged designer Amy Kalikow of Amy Kalikow Design to achieve this vision. The primary goal was to convert the home's traditional, closed-floor plan, which included distinct living, dining, and family rooms, and a two-part kitchen, into an open and cohesive area that would facilitate social gatherings.
The renovation involved significant structural changes, including removing walls and going "down to the studs" to create a brighter and more open first floor. Upon entering, guests are now greeted by a spacious foyer with a sweeping staircase, a custom monochromatic rug, and a vine pendant light. The former traditional living room has been re-envisioned as a lounge, featuring a full built-in bar with leather-paneled sliding doors to conceal storage. Open shelving displays decorative items. Seating in the lounge includes an S-shaped floating sofa and swivel chairs, complemented by a custom Crosby Street rug that harmonizes the color scheme.
The kitchen, previously divided into two separate rooms for cooking and dining, was unified into one large space designed for culinary enthusiasts. Kalikow incorporated a new kitchen island and a larger sink, along with a pull-out coffee bar for guests. The design emphasizes a timeless and classic aesthetic, utilizing a black, white, and wood palette. Key features include a stone backsplash with black and white veining, black fluting on the island, a plaster range hood, leather bar stools, natural wood flooring, and bleached oak cabinets. Additional windows with black frames were installed to enhance natural light.
In the dining room, cosmetic updates were made, and the existing family dining table, which can extend to seat 12, received a modern dark stain. A Peter Glassford collage-tile wall panel with a floating sideboard serves as a focal point. An impressive V-shaped Liberty Hanging Light from Holly Hunt hangs above the table, reflected in a hexagonal mirror. The family room was designed to be both cozy and stylish, catering to both family time and larger gatherings. It features a large L-shaped sofa from ABC Carpet & Home, custom-made nesting coffee tables, and tucked-away ottomans. A unique light fixture, designed by Kalikow, consisting of stained wood pieces with brass inlays, serves as a striking element in the space. The homeowners expressed satisfaction with the outcome, describing their renovated house as calm, adult-friendly, and family-oriented.
