Naples' Best Shop for Sustainable, Biophilic Home Design
At Faro, a design boutique located in the Galleria Shoppes at Vanderbilt in Naples, specializes in biophilic wares and artisan-made furnishings and home goods. The showroom features unique, organic, and modern pieces created by artisans globally, often arranged in artistic vignettes. These items, though seemingly simple, incorporate intricate details, such as a side table made from petrified wood with marble-like graining.
Fadia Bechara, the art director and founder of At Faro, emphasizes that biophilic design is not a fleeting trend but rather an ancient approach to connecting with nature. Her design philosophy, while leaning modern, deeply respects historical architecture and its inherent natural integration. Bechara honed her interior design skills in Los Angeles and Miami, and spent 16 years as an art director for the Italian stone company Travertini Paradiso before returning to the United States and settling in Naples.
Bechara launched At Faro in 2023, naming it after the Spanish word for 'lighthouse' to signify its mission of illuminating global craftsmanship through cottage industry production. Each piece is typically created on a microscale, often within family homes. Bechara frequently collaborates with artisans from Colombia and Indonesia, the latter being recognized for its sustainable practices and high-quality wood, with a commitment to replanting trees that are harvested.
In the past year, Bechara partnered with April Raque, an interior designer and Mayo Clinic-certified health and wellness coach, through a mutual friend. They now collaborate on Raque's existing Wellness by Design program, offered through her company, Wellness Design Group. This program focuses on helping clients create living spaces that promote overall well-being. Their combined approach incorporates the golden ratio for aesthetically pleasing and calming proportions, biophilic design principles, sensory details such as soothing scents and soft textures, and thoughtful spatial planning. Raque’s expertise in wellness is seamlessly blended with Bechara’s organic furnishings.
Their work together highlights the importance of an environment that supports health, particularly for women experiencing midlife changes. They emphasize that elements like colors, furniture placement, and ambient sounds or smells collectively contribute to a feeling of wellness within a home. For instance, in a staged home, a modular outdoor sectional with intricately woven fibers and plush cushions, framed by native sabal and saw palmettos, was designed for family gatherings. A home office featured a slatted teak desk opposite a traditional wood-posted daybed with a decorative throw blanket made from dried grass fibers, aiming to balance work and rest.
At the showroom, Bechara offers her family’s single-origin Colombian coffee to visitors and sells the grounds along with artisanal jarred goods from behind an oyster stone bar embedded with fossils. Bechara and Raque also plan to host health-centric design events in the space. They aim for visitors to see At Faro as more than just a shop, aspiring to elevate community well-being by encouraging individuals to consider how their homes impact their quality of life, thereby creating a positive ripple effect throughout the wider community.
