7 Designer Tricks That Make A Small Bedroom Feel Spacious

The perception of spaciousness in a small bedroom can be significantly enhanced through strategic design choices, transforming compact areas into comfortable and functional retreats. Designers from across the Southern United States offer seven key tricks that focus on maximizing visual space and utility without the need for extensive renovations. One fundamental technique is the use of a cohesive color palette, particularly by painting walls, trim, and even ceilings in a single hue. This approach, known as color-drenching, helps to blur the boundaries of the room, making it appear larger. Whether opting for dark, bold colors to create depth, as suggested by Tallahassee designer Jessica Ranjbari, or lighter, airy tones for seamless flow, as recommended by Minden, Louisiana-based Sara McDaniel, the goal is to eliminate visual breaks. Charleston designer Sarah Glenn Boman also emphasizes saturating the entire space with one color to soften edges and create an expansive feel. Contrary to intuition, selecting larger furnishings can actually make a small room feel more balanced and proportional. Designers advise choosing statement pieces, such as tall bookcases or vertical mirrors, that draw the eye upwards, adding perceived height. Crucially, these pieces should have a light footprint, meaning they should not be bulky and should ideally keep the floor visible. Richie David of Totally Home Furniture highlights the benefit of open, leggy furniture, low-profile platform beds with integrated storage, or wall-mounted nightstands to maintain sightlines and free up floor space. Optimizing natural and artificial light sources is another effective strategy. Hanging drapery close to the crown molding creates an illusion of higher ceilings. For spaces with naturally low ceilings, tall baseboards or crown molding can also draw the eye upward. Large window openings or the incorporation of transoms contribute to a more open atmosphere. Atlanta designer Olivia Westbrooks specifically recommends extending drapery as high as possible to integrate the room's height into the overall design, fostering an open and airy feel. To maximize versatility and functionality in small bedrooms, multi-functional furniture is highly recommended. A prime example is a Murphy bed, which can fold into a wall cabinet or desk when not in use. This feature allows a room to serve multiple purposes, such as a craft area or guest room, by easily converting the space as needed, as noted by Sara McDaniel. Streamlining and simplifying the room by removing unnecessary elements is also critical. Greg Huddy of C3 Studio suggests replacing bulky dressers with built-in storage solutions to keep the floor uncluttered. Designer Christopher Boutlier advises using wall-mounted sconces instead of table lamps to free up nightstand space and replacing large furniture with tall, narrow armoires. He also stresses the importance of curating decor with purpose, favoring fewer, larger pieces to create a calm and intentional environment rather than a cluttered one. The choice of flooring can significantly impact the perceived size of a room. Using continuous flooring throughout the space or laying a large area rug that covers most of the floor eliminates visual breaks and creates a sense of unity, making the room appear larger. Kristen Bonney-James of KBJ Interiors suggests selecting a rug approximately 12 inches shorter than the walls on all sides to extend beyond the furniture, thereby making the floor feel more expansive. Finally, embracing bold accents and thoughtful details can personalize a small space without overwhelming it. Austin designer Amity Worrel, experienced in designing small apartments, emphasizes keeping sightlines open and maximizing natural light, while also advocating for the inclusion of bold patterns or playful details. When proportion, color, and charm are harmonized, even the most compact room can feel dynamic, well-composed, and delightful. #BedroomDesign #SmallSpaceDecorating #InteriorDesignTips #HomeDecor #SpaceSavingSolutions #ColorPsychology #FurniturePlacement #LightingDesign #BedroomDesign #SmallSpaceDecorating #InteriorDesignTips #HomeDecor #SpaceSavingSolutions #ColorPsychology #FurniturePlacement #LightingDesign
