5 Things You Should Never Store In Your Bathroom Cabinets

Maintaining an organized and functional home often involves understanding the optimal storage locations for various items. The bathroom, while seemingly convenient for personal care products, presents environmental challenges that can compromise the integrity and longevity of certain belongings. Experts in professional organizing highlight five categories of items that should generally be kept outside of bathroom cabinets to prevent damage, maintain effectiveness, and optimize space. The first category is extra toilet paper. While it appears practical to keep backup rolls readily available in the bathroom, the high moisture levels in this environment can cause the paper to warp. To avoid this, it is recommended to store only one or two additional rolls within the bathroom itself, either in a cabinet or a basket, and to house the majority of your supply in a drier location, such as a hall closet. This approach ensures the quality of the product while still providing easy access to a limited reserve. Jewelry constitutes another item ill-suited for bathroom storage. The humid air characteristic of bathrooms can accelerate the tarnishing of metals. Furthermore, the presence of cosmetics and hairspray in the air can corrode delicate finishes on jewelry pieces. For these reasons, a jewelry box in the bedroom or another less humid area is a more appropriate storage solution, protecting precious items from environmental damage. Extra towels and linens are also best stored outside the bathroom. The primary purpose of a linen closet is to house these items, and utilizing it prevents them from being exposed to the bathroom’s moisture. Consistent exposure to humidity can lead to mustiness and mildew development in fabrics. If necessary, a maximum of one or two extra towels can be kept in the bathroom for immediate convenience, but larger quantities should reside in a dry, well-ventilated linen closet. Medicines and vitamins should not be stored in the bathroom. Contrary to common practice, the kitchen is a more suitable location for these products. A cool, dry kitchen cabinet is ideal, particularly for items that need to be taken with water or food. The heat and humidity prevalent in bathrooms can diminish the strength and effectiveness of pills over time, rendering them less potent or even unstable. Therefore, a kitchen cabinet offers a more stable environment for pharmaceutical storage. Finally, backstock and travel-sized items should be removed from bathroom cabinets. These products are not needed for daily access and consume valuable space that could be used for essential items. Consolidating backstock in a designated area, such as a linen closet, and creating a separate, ready-to-grab travel kit stored outside the bathroom, helps to declutter cabinets and drawers. This strategy promotes efficient organization and ensures that only frequently used items occupy prime storage real estate in the bathroom. It is also advised to be realistic about product usage and avoid retaining items that are unlikely to be utilized, further optimizing space and reducing clutter. #HomeOrganization #BathroomStorage #HouseholdTips #MoistureDamage #JewelryCare #MedicineStorage #LinenCare #Decluttering #HomeOrganization #BathroomStorage #HouseholdTips #MoistureDamage #JewelryCare #MedicineStorage #LinenCare #Decluttering
