This “Poorly Flipped” Living Room Got a Personality-Packed Redo Teeming with Color
Brandi Katherine Herrera, an interior designer known for her colorful and cozy cottage aesthetic, embarked on a significant renovation of her living room. The 1918 cottage, which she acquired in late 2023, had been subjected to a "poorly flipped" renovation by previous owners, resulting in the removal of all its original architectural details. The living room, initially characterized by blank white walls and builder-grade finishes, lacked character and personality. Brandi's objective was to restore the cottage's quaint charm while infusing it with vibrant colors and patterns, aligning with her signature style.
To achieve this transformation, Brandi implemented a multi-faceted approach. A key element was the installation of board and batten paneling on the living room walls. This architectural feature not only added visual interest and texture but also helped to reinstate some of the traditional cottage aesthetic that had been lost. The paneling was painted in a distinct goldish-tan hue, specifically 'Tanlines' by Backdrop, which served as a warm and inviting base for the room's new color scheme. This color choice was further echoed in a vintage sofa that Brandi had reupholstered in a matching gold fabric, creating a cohesive and sophisticated palette.
The overall wall color was updated to a brighter white, 'Supermoon' by Backdrop, providing a fresh backdrop for the richer colors and patterns. A striking element introduced was the front door, painted in a bold red shade named 'Bada Bing!' by Backdrop. This pop of red was not confined to the door alone; Brandi extended it to several pieces of raw wood IKEA and unfinished furniture scattered throughout the living room, thereby creating a vibrant, unified color accent that energizes the space.
In addition to paint and paneling, Brandi incorporated patterned textiles to add another layer of personality. She and her mother collaborated on a DIY project to create cafe curtains for the living room windows. They selected a mid-weight linen fabric featuring Josef Frank's distinctive “Vegetable Tree” pattern, which introduced an organic and whimsical touch to the room. The same fabric was used for throw pillows on the sofa, tying the textiles together and further enhancing the coordinated design. The combination of these elements—the board and batten, the strategic paint choices, and the carefully selected patterned fabrics—successfully converted a generic, characterless living room into a vibrant, unique space that reflects the homeowner's creative vision. The redesign breathes new life into the cottage, making it a “color-filled, character-infused ode to its original owners,” now enjoyed by Brandi, her husband Zachary, and their cat, Yves.
