8 Backsplash Styles Designers Say Are Dating Your Kitchen

The article identifies eight backsplash styles that design experts consider outdated, urging homeowners to update them for a more current kitchen aesthetic. These dated styles include polished glass tiles, mosaic backsplashes, countertop-like strips, heavily patterned and Tuscan-style tiles, murals and scenes, glossy white subway tiles with high-contrast grout, country-style tiles, and faux stone panels. Polished glass tiles are highlighted as a style whose era has passed. Melissa Lee, founder of New South Home, suggests that the design trend has shifted towards organic, grounded materials, making glossy or overly finished tiles seem out of place. Instead, she recommends embracing backsplashes with natural textures, tonal variations, and a handcrafted feel to bring warmth and authenticity to a home. Mosaic backsplashes, particularly those made from stone and glass, are also noted as an outdated trend, reminiscent of the early 2000s. Kelly Emerson of Aidan Design and Dallen Russell of InSite Builders & Remodeling agree that these styles, once considered sleek and modern, now appear fussy and over-designed compared to the contemporary preference for cleaner, more cohesive surfaces. Countertop-like strips, where the backsplash is made from the same material as the countertop (e.g., granite or marble), are another style to avoid. While once practical and seamless, Russell states that this look now appears unfinished and uninspired. Similarly, heavily patterned and Tuscan-style tiles, popular in the early 2000s, are described as weighing down a kitchen with a past aesthetic, with designers preferring to move past this look. Kitchen murals and scenes, especially those depicting Tuscan landscapes, vineyards, or fruit baskets, are no longer in vogue. Carla Royder, founder of Carla Royder Designs, explains that while these were intended to add European flair, they now commit the kitchen to a dated and specific theme. Glossy white subway tiles with high-contrast grout, though common in the early 2000s, have lost their appeal. Russell clarifies that while white subway tile itself is timeless, the stark grid created by dark grout lines firmly places this style in a particular decade, rather than allowing it to be a classic. Modern preferences lean towards a more subtle or uniform grout color. Country-style tiles, including beadboard and distressed metal ceiling tiles used as backsplashes, are also on the list of outdated styles. Royder points out that this "shabby-chic, farmhouse aesthetic," while once charming, is now considered too "cutesy" and impractical, particularly due to the difficulty of cleaning the grooves inherent in such designs. Finally, faux stone panels are universally advised against by designers. Lauren Saab, founder of Saab Studios, states that these panels "never land right" and consistently appear fake, failing to capture the authentic character they aim to mimic. These insights from design professionals emphasize a move towards more natural, simple, and timeless kitchen backsplash choices. #KitchenDesign #BacksplashStyles #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #KitchenRemodel #DatedTrends #DesignTips #HomeImprovement #KitchenDesign #BacksplashStyles #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #KitchenRemodel #DatedTrends #DesignTips #HomeImprovement
