A 1940s J-shaped ranch-style house in Redwood City, California, underwent a significant makeover to transform its cramped and disconnected interior into an open, light-filled, and highly functional space. The owners, a couple from the Bay Area with Indian roots and a passion for cooking, sought to address several pain points with their 1,300-square-foot home. These issues included a narrow and disconnected layout, a cramped kitchen suitable for only one cook, a heavily trafficked and tiny entry point, and a spacious but underutilized rear deck that felt disconnected from the main house. Architects Hiromi Ogawa and Lynn Fisher of Ogawa Fisher Architects, along with CB Builders, were commissioned for the renovation. Their primary objective was to open up the closed-off spaces and enhance functionality without compromising the home's original charm or its cottage-like exterior. The clients specifically requested a larger, more functional kitchen and a better connection to the outdoors, along with a design that would allow them to feel connected to each other even when engaged in different activities. The most strategic and transformative element of the redesign was the kitchen. The architects explored various locations and layouts before settling on an addition that effectively closed the 'J' shape of the original house, creating an 'O' or doughnut shape. This innovative design resulted in a small, elevated exterior courtyard at the center of all the living spaces, a layout that resonated with the homeowners, reminiscent of homes in India. Within the new kitchen addition, vaulted ceilings were incorporated to maximize natural light and offer views of the backyard. The design choices for the kitchen were meticulously tailored to the couple's avid cooking habits. Features included custom cabinets designed for specific cooking needs, open roll-out shelves beneath the cooktop, a long trough sink, open shelving, a butcher block counter on the island for baking, a large chalkboard for lists and recipes, designated apron hooks, and even a curing cabinet with an inset metal mesh to allow items to breathe. The central courtyard, accessible via large glass doors from the new kitchen, serves as a bright, cozy, and magical outdoor space, acting as a light well for the surrounding rooms and providing a shortcut to the living room on pleasant days. Beyond the kitchen, other significant modifications were made throughout the home to improve flow and openness. A portion of the original kitchen was repurposed to create a relocated entry, offering better access from the garage and increased storage. The remaining half of the original kitchen was transformed into a sitting/reading nook with views of the newly created courtyard. The living room, bedrooms, and main bathroom were updated with new doors and windows strategically placed to optimize views into the courtyard and other outdoor areas. Additionally, a guest bathroom was added in the space previously occupied by the old entry. Hiromi and Lynn also managed the interior design, embracing the clients' preference for color and texture and their openness to distinct themes in different rooms. This approach allowed for playful design elements, such as a green accent wall in the reading nook and blue-and-white ombré tiles in the kitchen. A bright yellow Heath Ceramics tile, long admired by Lynn, was incorporated into the bathroom at the clients' request, adding a vibrant pop of color. The bunkhouse is situated on Guemes Island, offering views of the Bellingham Channel, and was completed in 2023 with a total area of 590 square feet. This project aims to create a space for rest, quiet work, and family memories, with the intention that it will be passed down through generations. The bunkhouse is strategically located less than ten feet uphill from the property's existing 100-year-old log cabin. The original cabin has a unique history, having been built on Lopez Island, then dismantled and transported to Guemes Island in the 1940s. Unlike many neighboring properties that are built at the water's edge, both the original cabin and the new bunkhouse are positioned just inside the treeline. This placement offers a sense of privacy and seclusion while still providing westward views. SHED Architecture & Design's approach prioritized minimizing disturbance to the natural forested site. The bunkhouse's design frames specific views from its second floor, integrating it thoughtfully into the landscape. The project was led by Prentis Hale and Georgine Botha, with Dain Susman as the photographer. Kaplan Homes served as the main contractor, Jennie Gruss as the interior designer, and Todd Perbix as the structural engineer. In 2015, architect Dan Brunn embarked on a unique residential project in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, transforming an empty quarter-acre lot with a brook into an eco-chic, 4,500-square-foot modern dwelling known as Bridge House. The property, situated in a predominantly traditional area, presented a distinct challenge and opportunity for contemporary design. The construction leveraged a prefabricated building system called Bone Structure, a Canadian kit of parts consisting of columns and beams made from 90 percent recycled steel, likened to an Erector Set for adult home construction. This system, combined with infill made of structurally insulated foam topped with spray-on foam, ensured the house achieved net-zero energy consumption. The exterior of Bridge House is clad in panels of knotty grade cedar, providing a natural and refined aesthetic. Access to the property is gained via a rolling entry gate crafted from weathering steel, leading to a courtyard adorned with custom-made pavers. The interior begins with a striking double-height entry and living room, immediately distinguished by a vibrant green wall installed by Habitat Horticulture. This space also accommodates a baby grand piano, reflecting Brunn's personal passion for music, a path he contemplated before pursuing architecture. The flooring throughout the majority of the house is a terrazzo-like porcelain tile, selected for its permeability and featuring a shiny finish in common areas and a matte finish in bathrooms, a choice inspired by Brunn's visit to CERSAIE in Bologna. The linear layout of the house seamlessly transitions into the kitchen area, which is equipped with Caesarstone countertops and oak cabinetry, including a unique freestanding partition designed like an armoire. Adjacent to the kitchen is the dining section, furnished entirely with pieces from EQ3, including an oak dining table and chairs. This dining area extends to a spacious outdoor deck, complete with a fire pit, providing an ideal setting for al fresco dining and relaxation. A notable design element is the long hallway that connects the front of the house to the private rear quarters, which Brunn ingeniously converted into an art gallery. The intention is to collaborate with local galleries to showcase and sell modern and cutting-edge artworks, such as the custom triptych by Tasya van Ree displayed in the living room. The private wing of the house contains four bedrooms and baths, none of which are designed to be excessively large or overtly luxurious. Even the master bedroom, clad in cozy oak, reflects Brunn’s philosophy that the focus should be on the outdoor environment. The lower level of Bridge House serves as a significant recreational space. It features a sound-proof music room, a haven for Brunn’s musical interests, housing drums and a collection of guitars. Toy replicas of the Beatles oversee the musical sanctuary. Additionally, a secondary lounge and kitchen are located on this level, opening through glass sliders to a patio and offering a connection to the neighborhood. The design of Bridge House, despite its contemporary contrast with the traditional surroundings, demonstrates a sensitive approach to its environment and community.
