The Outdated Home Decor You Should Toss While Spring Cleaning, According to Designers

Spring cleaning is an opportune moment not only for decluttering clothes and broken items but also for re-evaluating home decor. Interior designers Rebecca Ward, Kaylee Pauley, and Rachael Rosenblum identify seven types of home items that are considered outdated and should be discarded to refresh living spaces. These recommendations aim to help homeowners achieve a more contemporary and appealing aesthetic. One significant item to remove is word art. While popular in the early 21st century, designers like Rebecca Ward now view it as passé. Ward suggests that instead of literal signs, homeowners should opt for more visually engaging pieces such as metal wall art, ideally crafted by local artisans, to add interest without explicitly stating a room's purpose. This shift encourages unique and locally sourced decor over generic mass-produced items. Worn entry rugs are another element to replace. These rugs endure significant foot traffic and quickly show signs of wear, such as fraying and stains. According to Ward, a tired entry rug detracts from the home's overall first impression. Replacing it with a new, fresh rug can instantly revitalize the entryway and establish a welcoming tone for the entire home, signaling attention to detail and cleanliness. Outdated scents also made the list of items to discard. Heavy fall and winter candle scents can feel out of place as seasons change to spring and summer. Ward advises switching to lighter, fresher fragrances through candles or reed diffusers to align the home's ambiance with the current season. This subtle change can significantly impact the perceived freshness and mood of a space. Fake plants are another major no-no, according to Kaylee Pauley. She advocates for replacing artificial greenery with live plants. Pauley believes that a home adorned with thriving live plants creates a more lived-in, welcoming, and vibrant atmosphere. Live plants not only enhance aesthetics but also contribute to a healthier indoor environment and offer a sense of natural vitality. Stand-alone bookcases are increasingly being replaced by wall-mounted options. Rachael Rosenblum points out that traditional stand-alone bookshelves often appear clunky and can make a room feel smaller due to their bulky presence. Wall-mounted alternatives, conversely, provide a lighter, more integrated look, which helps in maximizing space and making a room appear larger and more open. This change reflects a move towards more streamlined and functional storage solutions. Vintage reproductions and heavily distressed furniture are also out of style. Pauley suggests embracing authentic vintage and antique items that carry genuine history, such as aged terracotta pots or naturally timeworn mirrors. These items can be sourced affordably from secondhand stores, flea markets, and estate sales, providing unique character and a story that mass-produced reproductions cannot replicate. This approach emphasizes authenticity and sustainability in decor choices. Finally, fast furniture is discouraged by Rosenblum. She notes that while initially appealing, these pieces are often of poor quality and quickly deteriorate. Instead, she promotes investing in older, vintage furniture that can be reupholstered or refinished. This practice, known as circularity in design, is a sustainable choice that helps reduce waste by keeping furniture out of landfills. The emphasis on durable, timeless pieces aligns with a growing desire for eco-conscious home design. These expert recommendations collectively guide homeowners in transforming their living spaces into more modern, authentic, and sustainable environments during their spring cleaning efforts. #HomeDecor #SpringCleaning #InteriorDesign #DecorTrends #SustainableLiving #HomeRefresh #DesignTips #HomeDecor #SpringCleaning #InteriorDesign #DecorTrends #SustainableLiving #HomeRefresh #DesignTips
