6 Dated Home Decor Pieces You Need to Throw Out ASAP, According to Designers

The article highlights six dated home decor pieces that interior designers recommend replacing to update and refresh living spaces. These recommendations come from experts like Laura Umansky of Laura U Design Collective, Mahsa Afsharpour of House of Clark Interiors, and Laura Pankonien of The Collected Interior. The first dated item mentioned is all-white kitchens. While once popular for their clean look, designers now suggest incorporating more color and warmth, such as muted tones, wood accents, or colorful tile backsplashes, to create a more inviting and timeless aesthetic. The focus has shifted from stark white to kitchens with personality and character. Another decor piece deemed outdated is wall-to-wall carpeting. Although it offers comfort and noise reduction, wall-to-wall carpeting can trap allergens and make spaces feel smaller and less sophisticated. Instead, designers advise opting for hardwood flooring, luxury vinyl plank (LVP), or tile, and then layering with area rugs. This approach allows for easier cleaning, adds visual interest, and provides flexibility in design. Area rugs can introduce color, texture, and pattern, and can be changed more easily to refresh a room's look. Faux greenery, particularly plastic-looking plants, is also identified as a decor item to discard. While a desire for low-maintenance decor is understandable, artificial plants that lack realism can detract from a home's aesthetic. The recommendation is to replace them with real plants, which purify the air and add natural beauty, or with high-quality, realistic faux plants that are indistinguishable from living ones. The emphasis is on authenticity and natural elements. Matching furniture sets, particularly bedroom and dining room suites, are considered outdated. This style can make a room feel generic and lacks the curated, eclectic look favored in modern design. Designers suggest mixing and matching furniture pieces from different collections, eras, or styles to create a more personalized and layered space. This approach allows for greater creativity and reflects individual taste, resulting in a more unique and appealing interior. Open-concept floor plans, once a hallmark of modern living, are now seen as less desirable by some designers, especially in their most extreme forms. While open layouts promote flow and natural light, a complete lack of defined spaces can sometimes lead to functional challenges, such as noise transfer and a lack of privacy. The current trend is moving towards more defined, yet still connected, zones within a home, achieving a balance between openness and intimacy. This might involve partial walls, archways, or strategic furniture placement to create distinct areas. Lastly, accent walls, particularly those with a single bold color or a very specific wallpaper pattern that quickly goes out of style, are on the list of dated items. While an accent wall can add a focal point, the current preference is for more subtle and integrated approaches to highlighting architectural features or creating visual interest. This could involve using a different texture, a slightly deeper shade of the main wall color, or subtle paneling to add depth without overwhelming the space. The goal is to achieve sophistication and longevity in design choices, moving away from temporary trends. #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #DatedDecor #DesignTrends #KitchenDesign #FlooringOptions #FauxGreenery #FurnitureArrangement #OpenConcept #AccentWalls #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #DatedDecor #DesignTrends #KitchenDesign #FlooringOptions #FauxGreenery #FurnitureArrangement #OpenConcept #AccentWalls
