Architecture and design features and interviews | CLADglobal.com - Christian Louboutin
Christian Louboutin, renowned for his iconic red-soled high heels, has expanded his design influence into the hospitality and wellness sectors. His boutique hotel, Vermelho, located in the coastal hamlet of Melides, Portugal, opened in 2023. The venture into hospitality was initially unplanned, stemming from Louboutin's search for a new property after finding his previous home in Comporta too developed. He acquired a fisherman's house and a plot of land in Melides, intending to build a restaurant. However, a suggestion from the local mayor led him to develop a hotel instead.
Vermelho, a member of Relais & Chateaux and operated by Marugal Hotel Management, features traditional Portuguese architecture with white render, terracotta tiles, and intricate window details. Louboutin collaborated with Portuguese architect Madalena Caiado on the structural design. The interior design, a collaboration between Louboutin, Carolina Irving, and Patricia Madalena, reflects his eclectic style, incorporating bold colors, with "Vermelho" (red in Portuguese) paying homage to his signature brand color. Each of the 13 bedrooms is uniquely designed, showcasing local craftsmanship and pieces from Louboutin's personal art and furniture collection. The hotel's walls are adorned with hand-painted frescoes by Greek artist Konstantin Kakanias.
A significant aspect of Vermelho is its intimate wellness area, characterized by a maximalist design and featuring sacred stones from ancient churches. This area offers a mix of Indian healing practices and treatments in two dedicated rooms. Additionally, complimentary yoga sessions are held every Saturday morning. The hotel also hosts wellness retreats, such as the "Brain Edit" retreat led by Terrence the Teacher, indicating a broader focus on holistic well-being.
Louboutin emphasizes the importance of supporting local artisanship, a theme he discussed in an interview published in Dezeen. He believes that local craftsmanship is crucial for a country's culture and that replicating it elsewhere to reduce costs can harm the ecosystem of a region. This commitment to sustainability extends to protecting traditional artisan communities.
Further demonstrating his commitment to the hospitality industry, Louboutin acquired a stake in Experimental Group in July 2024 using his personal funds. Experimental Group, a Paris-based hospitality company, operates 20 boutique hotels, restaurants, and bars across Europe and plans to expand to Val d’Isère, Rome, Paris, and potentially the US. This investment signifies Louboutin's strategic move to broaden his brand's presence in the luxury hospitality market beyond his initial accidental hotel venture. He is also reportedly planning a second hotel in Melides, which will include a pool and a rooftop bar.
