100 Years of Finnish Design

The article details a comprehensive exhibition titled 'Hundred Years of Finnish Design,' showcasing the evolution of design and fine craft in Finland since 1900. This extensive retrospective is presented at the Nationalmuseum Design in Stockholm and is based on the Rafaela and Kaj Forsblom Collection, a private assortment of Finnish design works. The exhibition runs until October 29th, after which the temporary Nationalmuseum Design will close for renovation, reopening in 2018. The genesis of the Rafaela and Kaj Forsblom Collection dates back to 1999 when Kaj Forsblom gifted Rafaela Seppälä a glass bottle by Ristomatti Ratia. Rafaela, whose upbringing in various embassies fueled her nostalgia for Finnish design, developed a deep passion for the country's design history. The couple's primary motivation for building this collection is to safeguard significant Finnish design pieces from being dispersed globally. Rafaela emphasizes that each item in their collection has been carefully and thoughtfully selected, reflecting their personal dedication. The exhibition features approximately 200 works, highlighting key periods and artists in Finnish design. A significant portion of the collection focuses on glassware and other artifacts from the 1950s and 1960s. Prominent designers whose works are featured include Tapio Wirkkala, Aino Aalto, Timo Sarpaneva, and Gunnel Nyman. The exhibition also includes numerous iterations of Alvar Aalto’s renowned Savoy vase, a testament to its iconic status in Finnish design. Another significant area of focus within the collection is the work of Paavo Tynell. Tynell established Taito in 1918, a lighting manufacturing company that became the preferred choice for Alvar Aalto, underscoring Tynell's influence on Finnish design, particularly in lighting. The collection also extends to contemporary Finnish design, featuring pieces by modern artists such as Ilkka Suppanen and Kristina Riska, demonstrating the continuous evolution and enduring legacy of Finnish design. The exhibition provides a unique opportunity to explore a century of Finnish design heritage through a carefully curated private collection. It offers insights into the historical development of Finnish aesthetics and functionality, showcasing both classic and modern interpretations by celebrated designers. The display at the Nationalmuseum Design serves as a tribute to the rich and diverse contributions of Finnish artists and craftsmen to the global design landscape. #FinnishDesign #DesignExhibition #RafaelaAndKajForsblomCollection #NationalmuseumDesign #GlasswareDesign #AlvarAalto #PaavoTynell #DesignHistory #NordicDesign #FinnishDesign #DesignExhibition #RafaelaAndKajForsblomCollection #NationalmuseumDesign #GlasswareDesign #AlvarAalto #PaavoTynell #DesignHistory #NordicDesign
