On Design | Those Fabulous Finns

Finland, a country known for its unique design personality, is showcasing its blend of Nordic traditions with innovation through the exhibition “Straightforward: New Finnish Design.” This exhibition, running from May 14-17 at Chelsea Market, is the third in a three-year, government-sponsored project by the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, following “Hardcore” and “Playful.” Curated by designer Paola Bello and architect Teemu Oksanen, the exhibition's title reflects a dual meaning: “honest and frank,” and “looking ahead.” The exhibition highlights Finnish design's pragmatic and radical thinking, demonstrating how designers incorporate functionality with avant-garde aesthetics. An example of this is Tapio Anttila’s Tuohi wall panel, which is crafted from interlocking pieces of birch bark. This design exemplifies sustainability by utilizing a reclaimed material that is typically discarded during wood processing, transforming it into a ruggedly textured and visually appealing product. Another innovative product featured is the Skin tablecloth by Teija Losoi. This tablecloth is made from a high-tech stretch fabric, designed to fit a table like a sleek stocking. The choice of material and form reflects a modern and minimalist approach, embodying the Finnish commitment to both aesthetic appeal and practical application in design. Beyond merely displaying products, “Straightforward: New Finnish Design” aims to foster a direct connection between designers and the public. The curators and designers will be present throughout the event, allowing for personal interaction and discussion. An on-site pop-up store will also offer the featured objects for sale, enabling visitors to purchase and integrate these designs into their own spaces. To further enhance engagement, the exhibition includes “speed-dating” events, where visitors can participate in three-minute, one-on-one discussions with the designers. While initially met with some apprehension from the typically reclusive Finnish designers, this interactive format has become a well-received component, bridging the gap between creators and consumers. Prior to the exhibition, a free lecture titled “Perspectives on New Finnish Design” will be held at Scandinavia House, providing deeper insights into the contemporary landscape of Finnish design. #FinnishDesign #ChelseaMarket #DesignExhibition #SustainableDesign #TapioAnttila #TeijaLosoi #NordicTraditions #ContemporaryFurnitureFair #DesignInnovation #FinnishDesign #ChelseaMarket #DesignExhibition #SustainableDesign #TapioAnttila #TeijaLosoi #NordicTraditions #ContemporaryFurnitureFair #DesignInnovation
