10 Things Making Your Kitchen Counter Messier, According to Pro Organizers

A cluttered kitchen counter can negatively impact mood, increase stress, and hinder productivity, making it essential to identify and eliminate common clutter culprits. Professional organizers offer practical advice on decluttering kitchen countertops to create a more inviting, safer, and efficient cooking environment. One significant contributor to counter clutter is bulky knife blocks. These items not only occupy valuable space but can also harbor bacteria due to moisture and trapped crumbs. Organizers suggest replacing them with drawer organizers or magnetic knife strips to free up counter space, protect blades, and prevent bacterial growth. Similarly, an excessive number of small kitchen appliances can quickly overwhelm countertops. The recommendation is to keep only frequently used items, such as coffee makers or kettles, visible, while storing less-used appliances in cabinets or a pantry to be retrieved as needed. Another item that adds to visual chaos is drying racks. While convenient, they can be cumbersome and lead to water spots or mildew if left out constantly. A wall-mounted drying rack is an alternative for vertical storage, or one can hand-dry delicate items immediately after washing to reduce the time the rack is on display. Visible cords from appliances also contribute to a messy appearance and can pose a safety hazard, especially near water. Using cord clips or concealing cables behind appliances can effectively manage this issue. Cutting boards often linger on countertops long after use and tend to accumulate. Professional advice includes assessing the actual number of boards needed and questioning if they truly require constant counter presence to optimize prep space. Cleaning supplies like dish soap, sponges, and scrubbing pads, though frequently used, create visual noise. Storing these items under the sink or upgrading to decorative pump dispensers can maintain a more harmonious aesthetic. Kitchen counters frequently become a dumping ground for mail, keys, receipts, and other miscellaneous items. To prevent this, experts recommend establishing a designated drop zone near the entry door for such items, keeping the kitchen free from this type of clutter. Oil and vinegar bottles, condiments, and spice racks also contribute to a cluttered look and can degrade food quality if exposed to heat and light. Relocating spices to a drawer with an insert or tiered shelf, and corralling or decanting bottles into matching dispensers, can improve organization and preserve freshness. Cooking utensils, while necessary, can add to the mess if left on the counter. Designating a drawer near the stove for frequently used utensils, utilizing drawer dividers, keeps them within reach yet out of sight. Finally, fruit bowls, if not managed properly, can either appear overflowing and messy or sparsely filled and unappealing. Utilizing vertical storage solutions like fruit hammocks or wall-mounted baskets can be a functional and aesthetically pleasing way to store room-temperature fruit, maximizing counter space and maintaining a tidy kitchen. #KitchenOrganization #CountertopClutter #DeclutteringTips #HomeOrganization #KitchenDesign #StorageSolutions #CleaningTips #ProductivityBoost #MarthaStewart #KitchenOrganization #CountertopClutter #DeclutteringTips #HomeOrganization #KitchenDesign #StorageSolutions #CleaningTips #ProductivityBoost #MarthaStewart
