9 Tools to Organize Your Kitchen Like a Pro | Reviews by Wirecutter

The article discusses how effective kitchen organization can significantly enhance the cooking experience, transforming a good meal into a great one. This insight comes from Ellen Bennett, founder of the kitchenware company Hedley & Bennett, who honed her organizational skills as a line cook in top Los Angeles restaurants. Bennett's methods, originally designed for professional kitchens, are equally applicable and beneficial in home settings. Wirecutter, in collaboration with T Magazine, delved into Bennett's preferred organizational tools and techniques, ranging from specialized hooks for aprons to various trays and baskets for categorizing pantry items. The article highlights several key tools and strategies for a well-organized kitchen. Efficient drawer organizers are crucial; Bennett uses bamboo grids to separate cutlery and utensils, emphasizing that simply throwing items into a drawer is inefficient. She also prefers in-drawer knife blocks over traditional butcher blocks, as they save counter space and allow for easier identification of knife sizes. For frequently used items like aprons and bags, decorative wall hooks, such as those from Muuto, are recommended. These hooks are not only functional but also add aesthetic value, and Bennett strategically places them near her fridge for convenient unloading of groceries. Stackable food storage containers are another essential. Bennett opts for clear, rectangular containers with silicone seals to keep dry goods fresh and visible, making it easy to monitor stock levels. While she favors a Container Store version, Rubbermaid’s Brilliance Pantry Food Storage Containers are also suggested as a high-performing alternative. Labeling is a core organizational principle for Bennett, who uses chalkboard pens to mark both food types and purchase dates on her containers. This method offers a cleaner look than painter's tape and Sharpies, commonly used in professional kitchens, and is easily erasable. Nesting bowls, like the Bamboozle Pastel Nesting Bowls, are praised for their space-saving and multipurpose design. These colorful bowls can serve various functions, from mixing to serving, and their different sizes ensure that the right bowl is always available without using oversized containers unnecessarily. Streamlined cookbook shelves are also featured, with Bennett arranging her extensive cookbook collection by color on wall-mounted CB2 bookcases. This system prioritizes aesthetics and practicality, especially in earthquake-prone areas. For bulk spices and seasonings, Bennett advises transferring them into smaller, uniform glass bottles that fit neatly in drawers, with a preference for square designs to prevent rolling. Finally, stackable wire baskets are recommended for creating distinct zones within the pantry, keeping similar items together and making it easier to access bagged goods without disrupting the entire system. These systematic approaches, originating from professional culinary environments, aim to make home kitchens more functional, efficient, and visually appealing.
