mork-ulnes architects tucks a 38 sqm guesthouse on a steep hillside in california

Mork-Ulnes Architects has developed the Crest guesthouse and rental unit in Marin County, California, by building an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) on the exact foundation of an old garage. The design responds to the challenging steep hillside site and strict fire danger regulations prevalent in the wooded context. A key architectural feature is the sharply angled roofline, which mirrors the site's slope and incorporates a high clerestory window that introduces light above the cabinetry wall. A distinctive 'playful flip' in the roof allows for a punched window from the loft, offering views of the surrounding trees. The design prioritizes fire resistance, utilizing cement board for exterior cladding and roofing, and metal for windows and doors, eliminating roof projections to meet safety standards. To compensate for the steep terrain, a front deck has been integrated to provide additional usable exterior space, leveraging California's mild climate. The project emphasizes highly efficient spatial planning within its compact 38 square-meter footprint. The architects aimed to maximize functionality for every surface, describing the approach as having 'Swiss-army knife functionality.' This includes a rolling kitchen island that can be moved indoors or outdoors as needed, and a murphy bed that folds into the wall during the day and deploys for sleeping at night. A loft space, accessible via a ladder that tucks into the wall, features a window looking out to the trees and down into the living area, enhancing the sense of openness. The bathroom is ingeniously split into two smaller compartments: one for the toilet and sink, and another for a forest-green tiled shower room with a glass door opening onto the tree-covered hillside, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor bathing experiences. The design successfully maintains a sense of spaciousness despite the small area, achieved through strategic light manipulation. Light is allowed to travel freely through the building, naturally illuminating the interior throughout the day. High clerestory windows face the hillside, while large expansive sliding doors on the deck side invite ample light and extend the living area to the outdoors, connecting occupants with the view. The Crest Guesthouse is currently serving as a vacation cabin for the owners during the renovation of their main house, showcasing its versatility and functional design. The project was completed in Spring 2023 by Mork-Ulnes Architects, with Casper Mork-Ulnes, Phi Van Phan, Robert Scott, Lexie Mork-Ulnes, and Kaoru Lovett comprising the design team. Structural engineering was provided by David Strandberg, civil engineering by Adobe Associates, Inc., and general contracting by Damner Construction and Axelson Builders. Bruce Damonte was the photographer for the project. #MorkUlnesArchitects #GuesthouseDesign #CaliforniaArchitecture #SmallSpaceLiving #SustainableDesign #HillsideArchitecture #AccessoryDwellingUnit #CompactLiving #FireResistantBuilding #MorkUlnesArchitects #GuesthouseDesign #CaliforniaArchitecture #SmallSpaceLiving #SustainableDesign #HillsideArchitecture #AccessoryDwellingUnit #CompactLiving #FireResistantBuilding
