A Brentwood Home That Was Dark and Had a Bad Layout Gets a Remodel

The project, initially intended as a moderate renovation focusing on two children's bedrooms and a shared bathroom, evolved into a comprehensive gut renovation of a five-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom residence in Brentwood, Los Angeles. The primary goal was to transform a previously dark home with an inefficient layout into a light, airy, and highly functional space capable of accommodating a family of four and their grandmother. Prior to the renovation, the house suffered from dim lighting, heavy design elements that made it appear outdated, dark flooring, and a cramped living situation for the children who shared a single bedroom. Linda Hayslett of LH.Designs led the project, addressing the clients' desire for a more inviting and warmer atmosphere. Key objectives included providing individual rooms for the children to grow into, optimizing the kitchen for both storage and family gatherings, and creating diverse activity areas such as a playroom and a loft. The renovation aimed to ensure that every part of the home was enjoyable and utilized, moving beyond the previous state where only select areas were favored. Consequently, all rooms underwent renovation, maintaining a cohesive aesthetic throughout the entire home. Significant emphasis was placed on incorporating ample storage solutions, a crucial consideration for a family with young children. This was achieved through extensive custom cabinetry, ensuring designated places for all belongings. Despite the clients' preference for a modern aesthetic, the designer skillfully integrated color and character into the spaces. In the primary bedroom, abstract motifs in the drapery served as a creative alternative to traditional artwork, given the limited wall space. These draperies introduced a soft, dynamic element, changing appearance with the opening and closing of windows. Cultural considerations also played a role; in the playroom, red was incorporated as a symbol of good luck, significant to the Japanese-American clients. Rather than overwhelming the space, the color was subtly applied to the frames of artwork created by the children and the backs of two bookshelves, symbolizing playfulness and future good fortune. The kitchen featured another subtle yet impactful use of color: a chalkboard wall. This element not only added visual interest but also provided a fun, interactive surface for the children. Given structural limitations due to the main staircase behind the wall, the chalkboard offered a dynamic alternative to a large, plain white surface, contributing to a cool, warm, and playful kitchen ambiance. Furthermore, the design prioritized multi-generational living, ensuring the home was accessible, comfortable, and stylish for all ages. In the kitchen, the island was designed with a second level, facilitating conversation and comfort for the grandmother. Similarly, the entry area included a custom-designed bench that seamlessly integrated with the cabinetry, offering a convenient seating area for the grandmother during her daily routines and for the children to put on and take off their shoes. These thoughtful design decisions resulted in a home that not only met the functional needs of the three-generational family but also exceeded their aesthetic aspirations, creating a deeply cherished living environment. #HomeRenovation #FamilyHome #InteriorDesign #BrentwoodLiving #MultiGenerationalLiving #ModernHome #CustomCabinetry #FunctionalDesign #HomeRenovation #FamilyHome #InteriorDesign #BrentwoodLiving #MultiGenerationalLiving #ModernHome #CustomCabinetry #FunctionalDesign
