Nate Berkus Shares His Simple Formula To Style A Coffee Table With Ease

The coffee table is a central focal point in any living room, making its styling crucial for reflecting personal aesthetics and enhancing the overall room design. While selecting the right sofa and side tables is important, the coffee table itself, and its arrangement, plays a significant role in defining the space. The process of styling a coffee table, once the perfect books are chosen, can be challenging due to the multitude of design directions available. The goal is to achieve a chic, personalized, and clutter-free look. Interior design expert Nate Berkus offers a straightforward three-step formula to address this challenge, as shared in a recent Instagram post. Berkus's advice begins with the selection of the coffee table itself. He suggests choosing a table that is approximately 18 to 20 inches shorter than the accompanying sofa. For homes with children, he recommends opting for tables with rounded edges or substituting a traditional coffee table with an ottoman for added safety. The core of his styling philosophy, however, lies in his three-step rule: layering books, incorporating an organic element, and adding greenery in a handmade vase. The first step involves layering a few coffee table books. Berkus emphasizes choosing books that resonate with personal experiences, interests, or aspirations, such as travel destinations or cherished collections. This approach ensures that the books are not merely decorative but also evoke joy and provide conversation starters for guests, adding a meaningful and intentional touch to the display. The selection process should focus on personal connection rather than just aesthetic appeal. For the second step, integrating an organic element, Berkus suggests items like geodes or crystals. However, this category can be expanded to include other natural or sculptural objects such as small ceramic dishes, wooden bowls, decorative shells, or coral pieces for a coastal theme. A sculptural item like a marble link knot can also serve this purpose, adding visual interest and texture to the arrangement without creating clutter. The key is to introduce a natural or handcrafted touch that complements the books. The final step of Berkus's formula is to complete the look with a vase filled with greenery. This element is crucial for introducing height and movement to the coffee table display. A simple ceramic or clay vessel is recommended to allow the foliage to be the main attraction. Whether using fresh flowers, dried branches, or seasonal blooms, the addition of greenery brings a sense of life and vibrancy to the entire arrangement, harmonizing the layered books and organic objects into a cohesive and inviting centerpiece. #CoffeeTableStyling #HomeDecor #NateBerkus #InteriorDesignTips #LivingRoomDesign #HomeAesthetics #DecorHacks #OrganicElements #GreeneryInDecor #CoffeeTableStyling #HomeDecor #NateBerkus #InteriorDesignTips #LivingRoomDesign #HomeAesthetics #DecorHacks #OrganicElements #GreeneryInDecor
