Trend Spotting at High Point

The author attends the High Point Market, the world's largest home furnishings trade show, to observe emerging trends in interior design for 2020. Accompanied by local designers, the author explores various showrooms, noting a significant return to classic furniture forms. Manufacturers are reinterpreting traditional pieces through embellishments, exaggerations, or simplifications, creating fresh perspectives on familiar designs. Statement pieces are abundant, ranging from upholstered chairs and sofas featuring sculptural metal or wood exoskeletons to uniquely formed tables, consoles, and chests, alongside elaborate chandeliers. Color and texture are making a strong comeback. The palette includes blues, greens, soft pinks, and earth tones, alongside neutrals and even hints of 1970s harvest gold. Upholstery features soft velvets, fuzzy sheepskins, and embossed fabrics like snakeskin and alligator. Traditional florals, in both petite and overscale prints, are also returning, appearing on case pieces such as media cabinets and consoles. Seating upholstered with vertical channel tufting evokes an Art Deco aesthetic, while pieces with horizontal tufting offer a more exotic feel. Mixed metals remain prominent, with brass making a significant resurgence. Contemporary Italian firms like Calligaris incorporate shiny 1970s-style brass tubing with blackened nickel or bronzed metals, while traditional manufacturers such as Hickory Chair opt for softer, brushed brass finishes. Material mixing extends beyond metals to include cabinets and consoles with upholstered frames and natural stone tops, textured metal elements, and caned insets. Stone finishes, both natural and faux, are widely used for tabletops, including thick, 1970s-inspired designs and sleek porcelain surfaces mimicking marble. Geodes and crystals are employed as decorative elements, appearing in bowls, boxes, and even a fireplace surround. Dining tables, regardless of shape or style, are generally large, often featuring sculpted pedestals. Nesting side tables and coffee table groupings are prevalent, as are collections of small drink tables reminiscent of 1970s cigarette tables. Practicality is also a key theme, with many multimodal pieces designed for versatility, such as adjustable console tables that can function as sofa tables or narrow kitchen islands, and sofas with ratchet backs for adjustable lounging. Cocktail tables with tops that raise to desktop height also demonstrate this focus on functionality. Additionally, indoor/outdoor performance fabrics are gaining popularity, with traditional fabric houses like Thibaut and Kravet integrating them into their core offerings. #HighPointMarket #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #FurnitureTrends #DesignExposition #ColorTrends #MaterialInnovation #FurnitureDesign #HighPointMarket #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #FurnitureTrends #DesignExposition #ColorTrends #MaterialInnovation #FurnitureDesign
