This new gallery in Kyoto is crafted like a ceramic vase

Kaji Gallery, an art space and tea room situated in Kyoto, has been meticulously designed by Ukrainian architect and designer Serhii Makhno and his studio. The two-story gallery is conceived as a serene environment that seamlessly blends Japanese aesthetic traditions with a modern touch. Upon entering, visitors first encounter a verdant tea area that offers access to a green terrace. This leads into the main gallery space, where the walls are finished with clay using the Ukrainian mazanka technique. The structural framework of the room is crafted from warm wood beams, which complement rustic wood shelving displaying various ceramic vessels. The gallery's interior design incorporates wood furnishings that provide seating around the displayed sculptures and talismans. Notably, some of the design elements, such as the 100kg PYL chairs and the multi-component Kvartz chair, are themselves made from ceramic. Sculptural ceramic shades on the pendant lighting fixtures are integrated into the overall Japanese design context, enhancing the theme. A stairwell adorned with greenery connects the ground floor to the upper level, where additional exhibition spaces are present. These upper spaces feature Tetrapod tiles, which are an original design by Makhno Studio. A significant feature of the gallery is a large lecture hall on the upper floor, where Makhno has reimagined the ancient principles of shoin-zukuri. This reinterpretation incorporates materials such as bamboo, ceramics, and rice paper. Each component within the gallery, as described by Makhno, is intended to evoke surprise and inspiration, while adhering to core Japanese aesthetic principles. These principles include a focus on natural settings, the application of restraint in design, and the incorporation of wabi-sabi philosophy, which celebrates imperfection and transience. The gallery serves as a testament to thoughtful design that harmonizes cultural heritage with contemporary artistic expression. #KyotoDesign #CeramicArt #JapaneseAesthetics #MakhnoStudio #ArtGallery #InteriorDesign #WabiSabi #ArchitecturalDesign #KyotoDesign #CeramicArt #JapaneseAesthetics #MakhnoStudio #ArtGallery #InteriorDesign #WabiSabi #ArchitecturalDesign
