Jen Picciano’s Gates Mills Kitchen Remodel Was Inspired by Cleveland Restaurants

Jen Picciano, a prominent figure in Cleveland's media scene with roles on WOIO-TV 19's 'Cleveland Cooks' and WMJI 105.7-FM's 'The Mark Nolan Show,' along with her husband Benjamin Stocum, undertook an extensive first-floor renovation of their 5,000-square-foot Gates Mills home. The 1978-built traditional house was purchased in late 2022, and the couple spent nearly a year collaborating with Chesterland design-build firm Compass Studio to redesign the spaces. The primary motivation for the renovation was their love for cooking and entertaining, leading to a design heavily influenced by Picciano's experiences with Cleveland chefs and restaurants. The renovation focused on creating an open, functional, and durable environment that could comfortably host friends and family. This approach prioritized flow and transitional style. Key changes included opening up the foyer to reveal a second-floor bedroom and the entire staircase, creating a striking white-paneled entry. A significant structural alteration involved replacing a wall between the kitchen and living room with four columns supporting a steel I-beam, and demolishing another wall between the kitchen and sunroom to form an expansive open cooking and dining area. Picciano specifically noted that the open kitchen concept was inspired by the 'theater of dining out' observed in many restaurants. The heart of the new kitchen is a 48-inch Thermador gas range, chosen for its dual ovens, six burners, simmer setting, and cast-iron griddle. The range is complemented by a backsplash of light gray matte-finish Sonoma Tilemakers’ Dahlia pattern and a trumpet-shaped stainless steel range-hood shroud, custom-designed by Stocum to fit the house's lower ceilings. White cabinetry was custom-built to maximize storage for various kitchen items, including pullouts flanking the range for easy access to utensils. A built-in Bosch speed oven serves as both a microwave and convection oven. A central feature of the kitchen is a 12-foot-long island, separated by five feet of space from a similar structure, both topped with white quartz and painted Benjamin Moore Hale Navy. One side of the island provides under-counter cabinetry and functions as a buffet area, intentionally separate from the sink and dirty dishes. The other side incorporates a banquette, offering seating for four to five people at a 10-foot-long dining table inherited from Picciano's great-aunt. This banquette design was inspired by those found in Cleveland restaurants like Zhug, Kiln, LockKeepers, and Marble Room, with restaurateur Malisse Sinito providing input on the bench's pitch and cushion shape. The banquette is upholstered in a blue-gray commercial vinyl for the seat and a light blue woven performance fabric for the back. Further enhancing the entertaining space, a wall-spanning Hale Navy wet bar was installed in a smaller sunroom adjacent to the living room, transforming it into a cocktail lounge. This design choice aims to keep drink preparation separate from the main kitchen area during cooking. A future prep kitchen, featuring red cabinetry, is planned to accommodate Picciano's collection of small appliances, reflecting the restaurant practice of separating primary cooking from prep work like slicing and dicing. The success of the remodel was underscored by a chef's potluck dinner hosted by Picciano and Stocum in March, attended by notable Cleveland chefs whose work had influenced the renovation, all of whom praised the new space. The article concludes by providing three recipes, including Spaghetti Carbonara (inspired by Michael Annandono of Michaelangelo’s), Peruvian Aji Verde Sauce (from Vinnie Cimino of Cordelia), and Picciano’s own Carrot Ginger Soup, all of which are enjoyed in the new kitchen. #KitchenRemodel #HomeDesign #ClevelandRestaurants #GatesMills #OpenKitchen #InteriorDesign #CulinaryInspiration #JenPicciano #KitchenRemodel #HomeDesign #ClevelandRestaurants #GatesMills #OpenKitchen #InteriorDesign #CulinaryInspiration #JenPicciano
