An overhang with two inset LED downlights adds to its appeal. The side access door leads into the kitchen and dining areas, flanked by four smaller double-glazed windows with charcoal frames. A Velux roof light with a blind is positioned above the kitchen sink. The Azalea lodge is built to BS3632 Residential Specification (2015) as standard and features a fully galvanised chassis. A significant design challenge for the guest room was its small size and lack of a closet. The solution involved a semi-custom approach using the IKEA PAX wardrobe system paired with custom walnut doors from Fronteriors, extending to the ceiling for a built-in look. A simple walnut desk was integrated into the side, providing a private workspace or coffee spot. This approach highlights finding creative, attainable solutions that prioritize both aesthetics and functionality within budget constraints. Another key aspect of the design is the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. The guest room features a sliding glass door leading to a private patio enclosed by warm wood fencing, intended for guests to enjoy morning coffee or relax in a hammock. To enhance privacy and texture, two sets of Graber curtains—one light-blocking, one sheer—are mounted on a flush ceiling track, contributing to an architecturally serene feel. A major investment in the room was vaulting the ceilings. The original space had low, flat ceilings that made it feel dark and cramped. Allyson and Paul Riser, who annually vacation along Highway 30A in Seaside, Florida, embarked on a project to build a family retreat on a narrow, challenging lot in the heart of Seaside. Initially skeptical of the neglected strip of land, which they mistook for overflow parking, the Risers were ultimately convinced by its unparalleled location—catty-corner from Seaside’s town square and a short walk from the beach, offering wide views of the Gulf of Mexico. This prime location was a critical requirement for their large family, consisting of four grown children and a daughter-in-law. To overcome the constraints of the unusual lot size and accommodate their family's needs, the Risers enlisted Seaside architect Ty Nunn and Birmingham interior designer Fran Keenan. Their primary objective was to create sufficient bedrooms and gathering spaces, while Allyson also sought to infuse the new Florida build with the character and timelessness found in the old coastal homes of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Nunn designed a three-story house, one room deep and three rooms wide, with the kitchen and main living area located on the top floor to maximize the exceptional views. Filmmaker Gregory Caruso's 727-square-foot Craftsman cottage in Laguna Beach, a registered historical structure dating back to 1917, was recently transformed into a Zen-inspired weekend retreat. Husband-and-wife design duo Scott Jarrell and Kristan Cunningham of Hammer and Spear were tasked with the renovation. Having worked with Caruso on previous projects, the designers were given significant creative freedom after an initial concept presentation. Caruso's primary design inspiration was the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, interpreted through the lens of the 'Mad Men' series finale, which depicted a tranquil California retreat. While initial ideas for tapestries and tie-dye were toned down, the designers incorporated an "overdose of saturated color" to compensate and root the home in the region's artistic culture. The guiding touchstone for the design became the warm, woody California abode of sculptor J.B. Blunk, known for his Japanese-inspired aesthetic. Jarrell and Cunningham incorporated this ethos through elements like a vintage Noguchi lantern, a tatami mat in the sleeping nook, and antique Japanese wood boxes, all contributing to a sense of zen. The renovation emphasized tactful restraint, aiming to maintain original features and salvage existing materials. Swing doors in the hallway were refashioned into pocket doors, and the 105-year-old redwood walls were meticulously restored. The original Douglas fir flooring underwent sanding, staining, and sealing to bring it back to its new condition. The designers chose to keep material new finishes minimal to allow the redwood to dominate the visual narrative. Copper was introduced for new countertops, the kitchen sink and backsplash, and the bathroom countertop and tub deck, all hand-patinated by collaborator Derek Albeck of DDA Projects. The fireplace was adorned with teal handmade tiles, inspired by a puffed-edge Batchelder design. The cottage's classification as "Exceptional" by the Laguna Beach Historical Society presented unique challenges, particularly regarding exterior modifications. Gregory opted to defer exterior overhauls, meaning certain elements, such as the original windows and 1980s or 90s leaded glass panes flanking the fireplace, could not be made more efficient or removed. To address this, Jarrell and Cunningham ingeniously used paper shoji shutters as a workaround. Laguna Construction & Builder served as the contractor for the project. For Caruso, the cottage serves as a welcome escape from city life, suitable for small gatherings or hosting occasional overnight guests. The designers meticulously outfitted the entire home, from linens and bathroom essentials to kitchen gadgets and a vacuum, ensuring it was fully functional and ready for immediate use upon his first visit. The existing structures provided an ideal foundation, as their original design already promoted excellent air and light circulation, reducing the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning. Consequently, the main house's floor plan remained largely unchanged, with no interior walls moved due to its robust original construction. While the architectural integrity was largely maintained, the interiors, last renovated in the 1980s, required significant updates. Magness's approach honored Tuscany's architectural heritage through material selections, blending them with contemporary comfort. Much of the original terra-cotta flooring, wood beams, and plaster walls were preserved. Local craftsmen were employed to restore and clean surfaces, ensuring authenticity and quality. All marble used in the renovation was sourced from Carrara, and cabinetry was crafted by the Como-based company Promemoria, highlighting a commitment to local resources and expertise. The furnishing strategy combined antique pieces with new additions. The clients' appreciation for antiques meant that some prominent items inherited from the previous owners were integrated, contributing to a contemporary Italian aesthetic within the main house. The entrance features a barrel-vaulted brick ceiling and antique pieces that function as sculptural art, designed for circulation rather than prolonged dwelling. The dining room, also containing inherited antique furniture including a 19th-century sideboard, was enhanced with vertical mirrors to maximize natural light, particularly from the west-facing orientation. The formal living room maintains a minimalist, all-white aesthetic with comfortable sectionals, acknowledging that most entertaining occurs outdoors. A short distance from the main house, the former caretaker's residence, 'casa dei custodi,' was converted into a self-sufficient apartment with two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a kitchen. The most extensive transformation was the barn, initially the most dilapidated structure. Magness collaborated with New York–based architect Brian Boyle to extensively gut and refit it. This former hayloft now serves as a luxurious guesthouse, complete with two bedrooms, two-and-a-half baths, a central living room, a kitchen, and direct access to a pool.
