All The Secrets To Organize Your Kitchen
Many individuals face the challenge of inefficient kitchens, particularly in compact city apartments where cabinet and counter space are limited. This article details a kitchen reorganization project undertaken by Jeffrey Phillip, an organization and design expert, in Natalie Fine's Williamsburg apartment. Natalie, an avid cook, was previously hampered by her kitchen's layout, which made storing large pans and prepping vegetables difficult.
The redesign aimed to create a more functional, stylish, and organized kitchen that supported Natalie's cooking habits. The existing blonde wood cabinets, tan and mauve tiles, and brown flooring were integrated into a modern aesthetic through the addition of navy, stainless steel, and wood tones, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. A key element of the transformation was converting an unused wall, previously holding a small pot rack, into a focal point by installing a mirror. This not only added a clean and captivating visual but also reflected light, giving the illusion of a larger space.
To address the lack of workspace and storage, a slim metro shelving unit from the Container Store was introduced. This unit, less than 14 inches deep, provided both a work surface and adjustable storage without overwhelming the narrow kitchen. Its open design allowed light and air to flow freely. Kitchen tools, such as measuring cups, spoons, and a cookware set, were selected from stores like The Container Store and IKEA. A wooden knife rack was installed to keep blades sharp and accessible.
The placement of appliances was also optimized. Natalie's Vitamix and Keurig were moved from a utility cart, which was originally near an outlet on one side of the stove, to an opposite wall where they could remain plugged in. This freed up the utility cart for storing colorful fruits and vegetables in wire baskets, maintaining the kitchen's free-flowing theme. Small, practical additions included stackable bamboo drawer organizers and green trio bowls from CB2.
Visual clutter was minimized by using uniform glass oil jars on the counter, ensuring a neat appearance. For items stored in higher cabinets, a step stool was incorporated for easier access. Lazy Susan trays were strategically placed to organize spices and cleaning products, preventing items from getting lost and simplifying inventory management. Dry goods were stored in clear glass jars with handwritten black labels, enhancing both organization and aesthetics. A new bamboo dish rack complemented the color scheme, and the trash can was cleverly hidden under the sink using a simplehuman pull-out unit.
Bamboo stacking shelves were utilized inside cabinets to double storage capacity for jars. Fresh succulents were added to the windowsill to introduce a touch of nature and vibrancy. Beyond the kitchen, an efficient storage solution was implemented for Natalie's jacket collection. Instead of a crowded coat tree, hooks were installed on the wall near the front door, creating a welcoming area that also served as storage for extra dining chairs and a spot for putting on shoes.
