3 NYC apartment bathroom renovation veterans on what they learned from the process

Renovating a bathroom, while potentially less daunting than a kitchen overhaul, can nonetheless present a unique set of challenges and learning opportunities. Three individuals who recently underwent bathroom renovations in their New York City apartments shared their experiences, offering valuable insights for others considering a similar project. Their stories highlight common pitfalls, unexpected costs, and the importance of thorough planning, especially in older buildings. Renee Therriault from Cobble Hill and her husband opted for a bathroom facelift instead of a full gut renovation due to budget constraints, reducing an initial $16,000 quote to $5,000. A key decision that contributed to this saving was re-glazing their old cast-iron tub rather than replacing it, a viable option for tubs in good structural condition. They modernized their bathroom with black-and-white hexagon tiles, IKEA sink and cabinet units, and new fixtures from Restoration Hardware, demonstrating that strategic, budget-friendly choices can lead to a significant aesthetic upgrade. Renee emphasized the importance of not letting contractors dissuade you from cost-effective options and noted that a few luxury touches can make a lasting difference. Emily Gilbert from Windsor Terrace faced a more extensive renovation than initially planned. Her prewar co-op's bathrooms, last updated in the 1950s with pink and yellow tiles, were slated for a major upgrade. A leak from the master bedroom's stall shower, which her downstairs neighbor reported, forced a full gut renovation of that bathroom. Fortunately, the management company covered half the cost. In the full bathroom, they re-glazed the tub and lower wall tiles, installed new penny tile flooring, and replaced the shower window frame, while retaining the toilet and vanity. The master bedroom bath involved glazing the sink and tiling almost all walls. Emily learned the value of investing in high-quality tiles to prevent cracking and recommended vacating the premises during glazing due to toxic fumes. She also highlighted the likelihood of delays over minor details and advised questioning professional opinions, citing her experience with a contractor who claimed penny tiles couldn't be cut. Her proactive solution involved purchasing a tile nipper and cutting them herself. She stressed the importance of completing all planned tasks immediately, as deferred projects often remain unfinished, especially with children. Lisa from Park Slope experienced an unexpected gut renovation in her 120-year-old rental apartment due to a leaky pipe. This unforeseen issue escalated when the walls were opened, revealing rotted wood and additional damage, underscoring the potential for hidden problems in older structures. The project faced multiple delays and complications, including a dispute between the contractor and the landlord over costs and the need to rebuild an exterior wall that crumbled when new tiles were installed. A new, wider tub also necessitated moving the doorway, illustrating a series of unforeseen adjustments. Despite the difficulties, which prolonged the renovation to six weeks, Lisa was ultimately thrilled with her new bathroom, featuring classic subway tiles, a new tub, vanity, and fixtures. Her key takeaways included anticipating the worst in old buildings—assuming rotted wood and crumbling electrical systems—having alternative showering and restroom arrangements, and preparing for plaster dust to permeate the entire apartment. These experiences collectively offer a comprehensive guide to navigating the complexities of bathroom renovations in NYC, from budget management and material selection to handling unexpected structural issues and contractor interactions. #NYCRenovation #BathroomRenovation #HomeImprovement #ApartmentLiving #DIYRenovation #ContractorTips #PrewarApartment #BudgetRenovation #InteriorDesign #NYCRenovation #BathroomRenovation #HomeImprovement #ApartmentLiving #DIYRenovation #ContractorTips #PrewarApartment #BudgetRenovation #InteriorDesign
