The Insides of the Cabinets Are Having All the Fun in This Coastal-Cool Kitchen Remodel
Laura Bindloss, founder of Nylon Consulting and Designer Home Tours, undertook a significant renovation of her midcentury kitchen in Bellport, Long Island. The property, purchased as a retreat from New York City, featured a kitchen that was described as a "time capsule" with outdated cabinetry and butter yellow appliances. Bindloss, experienced in renovations, recognized the need for a complete overhaul, though she initially hoped to salvage some elements. A key decision was to retain the existing breakfast counter, located near the pool and its entrance, to minimize water tracking from her children.
For this project, Bindloss collaborated with Isla Porter, an AI-driven custom cabinetry manufacturer and supplier. This partnership provided professional design guidance and leveraged technology to streamline the renovation process, addressing common inefficiencies in kitchen construction. A central design goal was to create a coastal-inspired kitchen that avoided clichés, opting for a "casual, but still warm" aesthetic with ample color rather than a "washed out" beachy feel. Bindloss specifically ruled out a white kitchen.
She selected a custom shade from Isla Porter called "The Mood," a blue with gray undertones, which she considered a neutral color. This was paired with beadboard finishes on the cabinet doors, adding a nautical yet sophisticated touch. The design also prioritized practicality and comfort for a family home, especially given its proximity to the pool. The use of LIDAR technology via the Isla Porter app helped in planning and identifying solutions, reinforcing the decision to keep the breakfast counter for convenience.
Functional features included a hidden appliance garage to accommodate her husband's coffee setup and an induction range with a built-in air fryer from Monogram Appliances. These choices aimed to keep the kitchen organized and welcoming for entertaining. Another notable upgrade was the installation of underfloor heating beneath the white marble floor tiles from Home Depot, a decision made for comfort, particularly in the mornings.
The renovation also embraced bold design details. Isla Porter suggested a custom orange hue, "Fierce," for the interior of the cabinetry, providing a vibrant contrast to the cool blue exteriors. Bindloss further committed to boldness by choosing a marble slab with deep red veining for the countertops. Despite initial concerns about the combination of orange, red, and blue, the matte finish of the Artistic Tile stone contributed to a classic and cohesive look. This renovation successfully blended modern technology and design expertise to create a functional, stylish, and unique coastal kitchen.
