6 Before and After Kitchen Makeovers That Went From Seriously Dated to So Modern

This article showcases six kitchen renovation projects that transformed dated spaces into modern, functional, and aesthetically pleasing environments. Each project highlights specific design challenges and the creative solutions implemented by interior designers to achieve remarkable results, offering valuable inspiration for homeowners considering a kitchen makeover. The first transformation details a Connecticut home's kitchen, which was remodeled by James Veal and Christine Stucker of Stewart-Schafer studio. The original dark and cramped kitchen was gutted and opened up to bring in more natural light and air. Appliances were relocated, and the overall size was expanded. A central architectural element was created to house the stove, extending into the living room and incorporating custom bookcases and storage on its reverse side. The designers integrated wood, marble, and custom millwork to introduce an organic yet minimalist feel, blending original details with new elements to achieve an 'old-world European, yet modern feeling.' The second makeover features a kitchen with a Californian cabin vibe, redesigned by Naomi Gibson of Gibson House. The outdated kitchen, characterized by old floor tiles and retro appliances, was given a contemporary update while preserving some of its original character. Naomi introduced a sage green color palette for the cabinets, complemented by dark-veined marble countertops and brass hardware, creating a classic and timeless rustic aesthetic. Notable additions included a beadboard backsplash, a peg rail, and an oversized pot rail from Devol, along with sleek brass sconces and tiny almond cabinet knobs, emphasizing natural materials and textures. The third project, a 'Breezy Cali-Coastal' kitchen, was undertaken by Jennifer Verruto of Blythe Interiors. The primary goal was to modernize the space and optimize its functionality, particularly for cooking and storage of coffee and tea collections. The kitchen's footprint was reconfigured to enhance flow and increase storage options. The design incorporated deep blue cabinets, a black ILVE oven with vintage appeal, a white Ferguson farmhouse sink, white quartz countertops, and a textured ivory tile backsplash. The deep blue hue was specifically chosen to introduce warmth and serve as a bold focal point, contrasting effectively with lighter surfaces. Next, an LA kitchen underwent a moody makeover, celebrating dark wood cabinets. Amanda Leigh and Taylor Hahn of House of Rolison aimed to create a cocooning and cozy atmosphere. They selected Querkus white oak with a custom stain to highlight the wood grain and paired it with a neutral yet warm kitchen emulsion paint. Black and brass metals were used for hardware, and a fluted island was incorporated for added texture. Oversized kitchen pendant lighting was installed above the island to create a dramatic and unexpected focal point. For a 1960s kitchen in Calgary, designer Alykhan Velji of Alykhan Velji Designs addressed a closed floor plan and low ceilings that made the space dark. The renovation focused on maximizing natural light from two existing windows and making the kitchen the home's centerpiece. Old cabinetry was removed, and a new kitchen island was designed as a gathering spot with seating, featuring a granite waterfall countertop for aesthetic appeal. Natural oak cabinets in white and dark brown, with full-length designs, were used to create symmetry, and two overscaled pendants added a dramatic touch. Finally, a Venice Beach kitchen received a moody transformation by Tamarra Younis of Union of Art Interiors. Despite a tight budget, the objective was to infuse bold color, whimsical details, and unexpected fixtures. A previously white kitchen was converted into a dark, bespoke space with custom cabinetry and a statement fluted, curved island. The strong color change complemented an L-shaped sectional. Asymmetrical soft curves were introduced to contrast with the architecture's linear angles, most notably with a unique custom-designed kidney-shaped island layout that also functions as a living/dining area. The designer highlighted a shift towards darker tones and colors in kitchens, departing from traditional beach house aesthetics. #KitchenMakeovers #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #ModernKitchens #KitchenInspiration #WarmMinimalism #RusticKitchen #CaliCoastalDesign #DarkWoodCabinets #KitchenMakeovers #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #ModernKitchens #KitchenInspiration #WarmMinimalism #RusticKitchen #CaliCoastalDesign #DarkWoodCabinets
