Meet LaDarius Calhoun | Interior Designer
LaDarius Calhoun, the principal designer and owner of LaDarius Calhoun Design Company, operates out of Los Angeles, CA, with a hybrid office in central Florida, serving clients nationwide. Calhoun’s entry into the interior design industry began with an internship at an L.A. design firm, where he eventually rose to the position of senior designer before establishing his own company. He furthered his education in design and architecture, distinguishing himself through an intuitive approach to design that he believes cannot be taught but must be discovered from within.
Calhoun emphasizes that his journey has been about self-discovery as much as it has been about building a successful firm. Over the past two years, he has focused less on acquiring new projects and more on understanding his true self, which he credits for his current success and ability to overcome internal obstacles. He recounts how his passion for design, evident since childhood, led him to proactively seek opportunities by reaching out to local designers on Instagram, offering to shadow or intern, even if it meant administrative work. This proactive approach allowed him to immerse himself in the design atmosphere and learn rapidly.
He describes designing a space as a form of storytelling, akin to writing, where textiles and furnishings act as words that form the narrative pages of a room. Calhoun seeks to blend materials and influences that are soulful and evocative to craft a compelling story within each design project. He values client input, listening attentively to their aspirations and filtering them through his unique vision and classic-contemporary aesthetic. Collaboration and mutual education are key components of his design process, as he believes everyone involved has something to share and teach. For Calhoun, design is not merely a job but a lifestyle, approached with sincerity and founded on the principle of "honest design."
In a reflective moment, Calhoun offers advice on perseverance, acknowledging that contemplating giving up is a common experience, especially when faced with challenges. He suggests picturing life without the passion one considers abandoning, often revealing a more solitary and difficult existence. He advises against giving up on something truly loved, encouraging individuals to find new paths, seek knowledge, and not hesitate to ask for help. The core message is to keep trying, as breakthroughs can occur unexpectedly. Conversely, he advocates for letting go of endeavors that do not ignite passion, to avoid wasting time.
When asked about local recommendations in Los Angeles, Calhoun playfully admits to becoming a homebody since the pandemic. However, he suggests starting a day with fresh fruit from a farmer’s market, followed by a hike at Runyon Canyon for its scenic views and photo opportunities. A champagne or sangria brunch would follow. Later, he’d include tourist activities like visiting Hollywood Boulevard and specific movie sets from films like 'Friday' and 'Menace II Society,' noting that visitors often enjoy seeing how different Hollywood is from its cinematic portrayal. He concludes by humorously stating that hosting visitors is exhausting and he’d likely hand over the itinerary to an L.A. friend familiar with all the local spots.
