MC Pillows Creates One-of-a-Kind Decor Using Fabric Scraps
Molly Reinhardt and Cyndi Marty co-founded MC Pillows, a Parker-based company that transforms discarded designer fabric samples and extraneous yardage into custom throw pillows and other home decor items. Reinhardt, who has extensive experience managing design showrooms in the Denver area, conceived the idea after observing the significant amount of unwanted textile samples that were destined for landfills. She recognized an opportunity to repurpose these high-quality materials into beautiful and functional products. Marty, a skilled seamstress and long-time friend of Reinhardt, joined the venture, bringing her expertise in fabric manipulation and product creation.
MC Pillows collaborates with showrooms, interior designers, and upholsterers who provide them with discontinued samples or leftover fabric from high-end manufacturers such as Schumacher and Romo. These fabrics, which typically retail for over $200 per yard, are then meticulously crafted by a small team of local seamstresses into various shapes and sizes of pillows. The finished pillows are offered at prices ranging from approximately $50 to $125, making luxury fabrics accessible to a broader clientele while preventing waste.
Beyond indoor throw pillows, MC Pillows expands its offerings to include custom-made outdoor pillows, bench cushions, and even dog beds, catering to diverse client needs. The company's commitment to sustainability is evident in its substantial impact on waste reduction; Reinhardt estimates that their projects have collectively diverted about 3,000 pounds of fabric from landfills. This eco-conscious approach positions MC Pillows as a leader in sustainable home decor.
To ensure customer satisfaction and assist with design choices, the co-founders provide complimentary in-house or virtual consultations. During these sessions, clients can receive guidance on selecting the optimal colors and styles to complement their living spaces. The company maintains a dynamic inventory of ready-made pillows, which constantly changes as new fabrics become available. Alternatively, clients can schedule appointments at Marty's Parker home studio, where they can explore an extensive collection of available fabrics and collaborate with the team to conceptualize bespoke designs.
Marty describes their creations as "luxury—in a pillow," emphasizing the high quality and aesthetic appeal derived from repurposed designer textiles. The business model not only champions environmental responsibility by giving new life to otherwise discarded materials but also offers consumers access to unique, high-end home accessories at an affordable price point. This innovative approach addresses both ecological concerns and market demand for distinctive, sustainable decor.
