Level Lock Touch Edition review: This smart lock opens to your touch
The Level Lock Touch Edition represents an evolution in smart lock technology, moving beyond the traditional design paradigms of visible keypads and bulky battery packs. Building on the foundation of the original Level Lock (now known as the Level Bolt), which revolutionized the industry by integrating all smart components discreetly within the door, the Touch Edition offers external hardware while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic. This product aims to replace the entire existing lock system, offering enhanced features and a refined user experience.
Installation of the Level Lock Touch Edition is designed for ease and speed. The lock incorporates an adjustable backset and a clever magnetic deadbolt paddle that conceals screwheads, allowing for installation in under five minutes. The design prioritizes simplicity and integrates seamlessly with various interior styles, available in three finishes. The exterior and interior escutcheons are intentionally inconspicuous, mirroring the discreet nature of the Level Bolt.
The lock provides multiple methods of access, all of which performed reliably during testing. Users can control the lock via a dedicated smartphone app, which allows for sharing access with others, though advanced scheduling features (e.g., access only on specific days or times) are not available. For individuals without smartphones, the Touch Edition includes two NFC-enabled cards that can be programmed to unlock the door with a simple swipe. A standout feature is the touch-sensitive opening: with a smartphone in proximity and Bluetooth enabled, a simple touch of the lock with a fingertip unlocks the door. This touch functionality also extends to locking the door, with user-configurable settings. A geofencing feature automatically unlocks the door upon return home, though it requires crossing a perimeter (approximately 600 feet) for security, a behavior that cannot be disabled and may cause minor inconvenience for short trips.
For situations where technology fails, the lock includes two physical keys, ensuring access even if the internal CR2 battery (hidden within the deadbolt), smartphone, or other electronic components are inoperative. The Level Lock Touch Edition is HomeKit compatible, meaning iPhone users can integrate it into their Apple smart home ecosystem by scanning a QR code. However, remote control for HomeKit users necessitates a HomeKit hub, such as an Apple HomePod, HomePod mini, a second-generation Apple TV 4K, or a dedicated iPad. For Android users, remote control initially required an Amazon Sidewalk bridge or a Level Connect Bluetooth-to-Wi-Fi bridge (which has since been made available), highlighting a past limitation in broader platform compatibility. The device's activity log is limited to 20 entries, and while support for Alexa and Google Assistant was initially absent, it has since been added to Level locks.
The primary drawback of the Level Lock Touch Edition is its price, which at $329, positions it as one of the more expensive smart locks on the market. While the added features like touch-sensitive opening and the integrated hardware are compelling, the cost premium over the Level Bolt ($229) may not be justifiable for all consumers, with some preferring the retrofit Bolt. Despite the cost, the Level Lock Touch Edition is recognized as a high-quality product, particularly for those looking for a complete lock replacement rather than a retrofit solution. Subsequent updates have refined the product's naming (adding "Touch Edition") and expanded remote control options for Android users through Amazon Sidewalk and the Level Connect bridge, broadening its appeal and functionality.
