Level Bolt smart lock review

The Level Bolt smart lock is designed for users who desire smart home security without altering the aesthetic of their existing deadbolt. This smart lock integrates entirely within the door, making it invisible from both the interior and exterior, preserving the traditional look of the entryway. This review details its design, installation process, performance, app features, and smart home compatibility. Initially priced at $229 upon its release in 2020, the Level Bolt can now be found for $199 or less. It is available in two versions, accommodating deadbolts with either a 2.75-inch or a 2.375-inch "backseat," which refers to the distance between the deadbolt's center and the door's edge. Before purchasing, it is essential to measure the door's specifications. Level also offers several accessories to enhance the smart lock's functionality. The Level Connect, a $79 Wi-Fi bridge, eliminates the need for a separate smart home hub by enabling direct connection to a home Wi-Fi network. Additionally, the $79 wireless Level Keypad provides a code-based entry alternative to using a smartphone. For added convenience, 4-packs of NFC key cards and key fobs are available for $20 each, allowing for alternative unlocking methods. The Level Bolt's design emphasizes discretion, as its components are installed within the deadbolt mechanism itself. This setup ensures that the smart lock is completely concealed, maintaining the original appearance of the door. The device consists of a circular central section that connects to the deadbolt and the bolt itself, which secures the door when closed. Key specifications include Bluetooth connectivity, power from a replaceable CR2 battery (expected to last up to a year), and compatibility with HomeKit, Alexa, and Ring. Installation requires a door width of at least 1.75 inches, a deadbolt bore hole diameter of 2.125 inches, a backset of 2.75 or 2.375 inches, and a cross bore hole diameter of 1 inch. The installation process for the Level Bolt is more involved than with some other smart locks, requiring the removal of the existing deadbolt and plates from both the door and the door jamb. The Level Bolt's bolt and central section must then be inserted into the door's cutout and aligned with the deadbolt halves before being secured. After confirming proper door closure and locking, the CR2 battery is inserted into the bolt, which is hollow to accommodate it. Despite the hollow design, the lock boasts an ANSI-1 rating, indicating its robustness against significant force and cutting tools. The setup is completed by connecting the lock to the Level Bolt app via Bluetooth and integrating it with HomeKit using a QR code. The entire installation and setup typically take about 30 minutes, with a professional installation service offered for $79. In terms of performance, the Level Bolt operates smoothly and efficiently, locking and unlocking the door without noticeable delay via a single button press on a smartphone. Remote control is possible through a HomeKit Hub (such as an iPad, Apple TV, or HomePod), though its range is limited due to Bluetooth communication, unlike locks utilizing Wi-Fi, Zigbee, or Z-Wave. The Level Bolt app features a minimalist home screen with an icon that, when pressed and held, unlocks the door. While aesthetically pleasing, it lacks the immediate visual feedback of a locked/unlocked status found in other smart lock apps. The app supports guest passes for temporary access and allows for user management, including recurring access schedules. A notable feature is the adjustable auto-relock function, which can be set for up to 3 minutes. However, a limitation is its inability to detect or report if the door is open or closed. Regarding smart home compatibility, the Level Bolt seamlessly integrates with Apple HomeKit, enabling control via Siri and Apple Watch. HomeKit allows for automatic unlocking upon arrival and provides notifications for lock usage and low battery status. Advanced automations can be configured through HomeKit, such as a 'Good Night' routine that locks doors and turns off lights. Post-June 2021 updates also brought compatibility with Alexa and Ring. The primary distinctions between the Level Bolt and top competitors like the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock include the Level Bolt's lack of door-open detection and the requirement of a separate bridge for Wi-Fi connectivity. Despite these points, the Level Bolt is considered a capable smart lock, particularly appealing to users within the Alexa and HomeKit ecosystems who prioritize a discreet smart lock solution. #SmartLock #HomeSecurity #LevelBolt #AppleHomeKit #AlexaCompatible #SmartHome #IoT #ProductReview #SmartLock #HomeSecurity #LevelBolt #AppleHomeKit #AlexaCompatible #SmartHome #IoT #ProductReview
