U-tec Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro review: A do-it-all lock held back by complex installation
The U-tec Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro is marketed as a comprehensive "6-in-1 smart deadbolt," offering numerous methods for accessing a property. These methods include operation via the U-Lock app, a numeric keypad, fingerprint recognition, or a traditional physical key. Additional app-based features, automatic unlock through geofencing and "Magic Shake," also contribute to its versatility. Despite this array of features, the initial setup process presents significant challenges.
The U-Lock Pro hardware features a compact, all-black design, distinguishing it from bulkier smart lock systems. However, its exterior, with a ring of numeric buttons, may not appeal to all users, reminiscent of a wall safe. The installation, while seemingly straightforward, requires meticulous attention to a dense manual. Deviations from these instructions can render the lock non-functional, a point experienced by the reviewer during a lengthy trial-and-error period.
A critical installation hurdle involves the tailpiece, a metal bar that engages the deadbolt mechanism. For doors of standard thickness, this tailpiece must be trimmed. The manual suggests using pliers, but the reviewer found this method ineffective due to the metal's strength, necessitating a hacksaw. This process, requiring specialized tools and considerable effort, is noted as a significant potential source of frustration for homeowners. U-Tec has since indicated that they are now pre-trimming the tailpiece at the factory to alleviate this issue.
Further installation nuances include ensuring the tailpiece is horizontally oriented and the deadbolt knob vertically positioned. The lock is also highly sensitive to screw tightness; overtightening any of the four internal screws can cause the deadbolt to jam. The reviewer had to experiment extensively to find the correct screw tension that allowed proper operation.
To connect the lock to a home network, a small Wi-Fi bridge is required, either bundled with the lock or purchased separately. This bridge, which links the lock's Bluetooth radio to Wi-Fi, must be placed within 10 feet of the door and occupy a permanent power socket.
Once installed, the U-tec mobile app is surprisingly robust and intuitive. Despite a minor initial pairing hiccup, the app allows users to easily lock or unlock the deadbolt via a prominent on-screen button. User management is streamlined, enabling the addition of new residents and temporary visitors. Users can be assigned 4- to 8-digit PINs, provided app access, and have their fingerprints registered. Temporary access can be customized with limitations based on date, time, or usage count. A comprehensive and easily readable history menu logs all activity.
While the app can be slow to connect at times, and the "Magic Shake" feature is considered superfluous, the overall performance of the lock is commendable. The physical buttons on the exterior escutcheon are more responsive than typical touchscreen locks, and the fingerprint reader consistently performs well. Additional features include the ability to input random digits before and after a PIN for enhanced security, a physical keyhole for battery depletion emergencies, and a micro-USB port for temporary power. Support for Alexa, Google Assistant, and IFTTT is also present, though voice control functionalities are limited. The geofencing feature, however, did not function as expected during testing.
Ultimately, the U-Lock Pro's significant installation difficulties and minor lingering bugs are counterbalanced by its extensive smart features, highly effective fingerprint scanner, and well-designed app. Despite the challenging setup, the lock offers a compelling array of functionalities for those willing to navigate the initial complexities.
