How to design a bathroom that’s easy to clean
Cleaning the bathroom is often considered an unappealing chore, largely due to old or poorly designed wet rooms that require significant effort to maintain cleanliness. However, with thoughtful design choices during construction or renovation, it is possible to create a bathroom that is both stylish and easy to clean, thereby minimizing the time spent on this essential task.
One key recommendation for an easy-clean bathroom is to opt for a back-to-wall bath. While freestanding baths are aesthetically pleasing, they often create hard-to-reach cavities where dust and grime can accumulate. A freestanding back-to-wall bath offers a compromise, providing the visual appeal of a freestanding unit while sitting flush against the wall, preventing dirt build-up in inaccessible areas. This design maximizes both beauty and practicality in the bathroom space.
Another significant innovation for hygiene and ease of cleaning is the rimless toilet. This technology has become increasingly popular in residential settings over the last decade, offering a more effective flush that significantly reduces the accumulation of germs and grime, as there are no hidden ledges for dirt to cling to. Further enhancing cleanliness, in-wall cisterns and back-to-wall designs prevent dust from gathering on or behind the toilet. For an added sense of space and even easier cleaning, a wall-hung rimless pan allows for effortless sweeping or mopping underneath.
The choice of tiles also plays a crucial role in bathroom maintenance. Large-format tiles are recommended as they reduce the amount of grout lines, which are notoriously difficult to keep clean. Less grout means less scrubbing and less opportunity for mold and mildew to grow. Additionally, the color of the grout is important; darker shades are less likely to show dirt and grime compared to bright white grout, unless a light color is a specific design requirement. For floor tiles, darker shades are generally more practical as they camouflage dust and hair more effectively than lighter options.
For basins, a recessed design, where the basin sits within the vanity top, is preferable for cleaning and hygiene. While countertop basins remain popular, particularly in powder rooms for their distinctive aesthetic, recessed basins simplify the cleaning process. When it comes to tapware, wall-mounted basin mixers are advised. This choice frees up space on the vanity unit, making cleaning easier and contributing to a more minimalist, uncluttered appearance. The type of finish on tapware also matters; shiny metallic finishes like chrome or brass tend to show fewer water marks than matte black options.
Open showers are a contemporary trend that can be easy to clean if designed correctly. To prevent water from splashing excessively, it is suggested to use a single glass shower screen paired with tiled walls. Integrating the shower floor to be a seamless continuation of the main bathroom floor also aids in easier cleaning. A twin rail shower, incorporating both an overhead and a hand shower, offers additional convenience. The hand shower, in particular, simplifies the cleaning of the shower area itself, as well as making it easier to bathe young children or pets.
Finally, selecting a mirrored wall cabinet helps keep personal products and clutter out of sight yet within easy reach, thereby reducing dust accumulation on the vanity top and minimizing cleaning efforts. A wall-hung vanity further contributes to ease of cleaning by leaving the floor underneath clear, and it also enhances the perception of space and lightness in the bathroom.
