Home office is interior designer’s bold portfolio sample in itself

Rhonnika Clifton, a Houston-based interior designer, transformed a seldom-used room in her home into a vibrant and functional office space that reflects her bold and colorful personality. After operating a different decorating business from 2006 to 2013 and then relaunching R J Clifton Designs in 2015 post-degree in interior design from the Art Institute of Houston, Clifton sought to create an office that would impress clients and elevate her business. She aimed to make the 12-by-13-foot room comfortable, inviting, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. Clifton’s design choices were driven by a desire for a powerful visual statement, particularly in the flooring. Inspired by a vendor at a design conference who created vinyl floor, wall, and ceiling decorations, she opted for a striking floral pattern for her office floor. The design features larger-than-life flowers in pinks, blues, and creams against a black background, complemented by vivid green foliage. This choice was initially a significant decision that required convincing her mother, with whom she shares her home, but ultimately received approval after a simpler test on the garage floor. Clifton describes her office as "Candy Land" and a "fantasy" distinct from the rest of her home, underscoring its unique and expressive nature. She incorporated Sherwin-Williams’ Eros Pink on the ceiling and inside bookcases, referring to it as her "Barbie pink" and a favorite color she wanted to use boldly. The color palette from the floor's floral pattern was extended throughout the room to ensure visual cohesion despite the audacious prints. For instance, a black-and-white geometric fabric was used for window treatments, and a decorative pillow in a similar print adorned a counter. Black sconces frame a colorful abstract painting that echoes the room’s dominant hues, demonstrating how various elements were harmonized through color coordination. The office is designed to be highly multifunctional, despite its modest size. It includes a desk with an office chair, a small bar, a niche with a chair and a small workspace, and built-in cabinets. Clifton also innovatively converted a closet into a storage solution, adding a pegboard and shelving to organize fabric samples and hide office equipment like a document shredder. Essential elements considered during the renovation included layered lighting, with five recessed lights, wall sconces, and a table lamp to ensure adequate illumination. She also thoughtfully planned electrical outlets for various office equipment, including a television and printer. Clifton integrated sentimental antique pieces into the contemporary design. She retained a pair of Victorian high-back chairs from the room's previous use as a sitting room, repainting their wood frames and reupholstering them in navy-blue velvet with nailhead trim. This blend of old and new demonstrates her respect for sentimental value while achieving a modern aesthetic. The creation of this office has significantly benefited her business, providing a professional and inspiring environment suitable for client meetings. Clifton expressed that the office was a strategic move to elevate her design firm, and while her mother might not personally choose such a bold design, her approval was evident in her pride when showing off the space to friends. #InteriorDesign #HomeOffice #RhonnikaClifton #BoldDecor #ColorfulDesign #HoustonDesigner #SpaceUtilization #ClientPresentation #AntiquesInDesign #InteriorDesign #HomeOffice #RhonnikaClifton #BoldDecor #ColorfulDesign #HoustonDesigner #SpaceUtilization #ClientPresentation #AntiquesInDesign
