Inside Artist and Designer Jennifer Miller’s 1930s Spanish-Style Silver Lake Bungalow
Artist and designer Jennifer Miller transformed her 1930s Spanish-style bungalow in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, into a home that seamlessly blends her artistic vision with a curated, layered aesthetic. The two-bedroom, one-bathroom residence, which initially had good architectural bones but lacked personal character, was meticulously redesigned by Miller over a decade to reflect her artistic spirit, travel experiences, and an appreciation for California living. Her design philosophy centers on creating a serene yet inspiring space that acts as an extension of her art and a personal design laboratory.
The renovation began with a focus on adding layers of texture, color tones, and artistry to the previously uninspired interior. Miller's primary goal was to cultivate an environment that was both tranquil and stimulating, envisioning her home as a 'tranquil garden retreat' filled with light, color, and texture. She drew inspiration from the organic forms and vibrant colors of the outdoors, specifically referencing the verdant gardens of Silver Lake, the sun-kissed palette of the California coast, and the timeless elegance of the home's original Spanish architecture. Her own artwork, alongside a collection of curated pieces, guided the selection of color schemes and patterns throughout the house, allowing her to experiment with bolder palettes and intricate designs.
Key design elements include the living room, where dark-stained ceiling beams were painted white to enhance natural light, complementing the soft, organic textures of the upholstery. Vintage textiles were incorporated to pair with the diverse artwork, creating a sense of effortless collection. In the primary bedroom, Miller aimed for a tranquil sanctuary. She used her own “Vines” wallpaper from Miller House in the “Salt” colorway, adding hand-painted Japanese garden flowers and repurposing inlaid Indian chests as nightstands to create a layered aesthetic that evokes calm. The bathroom retained its original quirky yellow and turquoise tiles, which Miller embraced by updating the space with Farrow & Ball wallpaper and new light fixtures, demonstrating that existing character can be integrated into a refined design.
Miller describes her home as a 'casual showroom' where art and design converge, and a space for continuous experimentation. Designing for herself offered creative freedom, allowing her to realize a vision without compromise, though it required self-discipline to navigate the details. The ongoing evolution of her home is a testament to her philosophy of patient cultivation and allowing the creative journey to unfold naturally. She notes that the space continuously reinvents itself through new art pieces, commissions, or items finding their perfect place, crafting a unique history that is written one curated layer at a time. The result is a home that deeply resonates with her soul and artistic identity.
