A Dome-Shaped Austin Home Gets a Kitchen Worthy of its History

This article details the comprehensive kitchen renovation of a unique dome-shaped home in Westlake Hills, Texas, originally built in the 1970s by architect John Watson, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. The home, known for its harmonious integration with the surrounding Hill Country, faced significant functional challenges due to a previous 1980s renovation that haphazardly combined two small kitchens into a single, awkward space. The existing kitchen suffered from a major wall down the middle, low ceiling heights accommodating old air conditioning units, minimal cabinet space, and a complete lack of a pantry, making it outdated and impractical for Haley Rushing and her family. Haley, co-founder of The Purpose Institute, recognized the need for a major overhaul but postponed the kitchen renovation until other parts of the home were updated. When the time came, she partnered with CG&S Design-Build, a firm that already possessed strong working knowledge of her unique home. Architect Joanna Hartman of CG&S Design-Build described the original kitchen as functional on a basic level but inadequate for the family's culinary and social needs. The primary goals for the renovation included creating functional storage, opening the kitchen to the living room, providing proper ventilation for the cooktop, and significantly increasing the ceiling height. The project presented numerous challenges, such as unexpected plumbing and electrical issues behind walls, and the complex task of integrating a vent hood within a dome structure. Haley noted that nothing from the previous owner's renovation was up to code, requiring extensive problem-solving by the CG&S team. To honor the home's original dome structure, the design team meticulously planned the new kitchen around three existing weight-supporting columns, which influenced the length and placement of the new island. A minimal aesthetic was chosen to emphasize the dome's impressive shape, with wood selected as a key natural material to complement the man-made finish of the dome. The aim was to create a modern kitchen that would align with the home's original modernity but also bring it forward another 60 years in design and functionality. Once the ceiling was lifted, floors leveled, and a pantry incorporated, Arete Kitchens was brought in to provide a Leicht system, custom-made in Germany and assembled on-site. The final design included appliances seamlessly integrated behind wood panels, contributing to a "great room" feel where the kitchen blends into the living space, making it a central gathering point for the family. After seven months of construction, the renovation was completed in October, transforming the kitchen into a jewel that perfectly blends with the home's historic and architectural significance. Despite the unforeseen obstacles, Haley expressed satisfaction with the team's ability to share and execute her vision for a creative and highly unusual home. The new kitchen now serves as a connective center for her family, a stark contrast to the inadequacies of the previous space, highlighting the successful transformation of an outdated area into a functional, modern, and aesthetically congruent heart of the home. #DomeHome #KitchenRenovation #HistoricPreservation #ModernDesign #ArchitecturalHarmony #CG&SDesignBuild #AustinHomes #InteriorArchitecture #DomeHome #KitchenRenovation #HistoricPreservation #ModernDesign #ArchitecturalHarmony #CG&SDesignBuild #AustinHomes #InteriorArchitecture
