Design pros share their best tips for renovating and styling your bathroom

Renovating a bathroom requires careful consideration of both aesthetics and functionality. Drawing insights from the judges of 'The Block' — Shaynna Blaze, Darren Palmer, and Neale Whitaker — several key principles emerge for creating an outstanding bathroom space. These principles range from strategic material choices to optimal fixture placement and overall design philosophy, aiming to enhance both the visual appeal and daily usability of the bathroom. One crucial aspect highlighted is the balance in tile selection. Tiles are a significant component of any bathroom, both visually and financially. If a distinctive, high-impact tile is chosen as a feature, it should be complemented by more economical and simpler tiles in other areas of the bathroom. This approach allows the feature tile to stand out without overwhelming the space or the budget, as demonstrated by Mitch and Mark's main bathroom, where a bold Norwegian Rose arched fan tile was balanced with larger, white, economical tiles. Functionality extends to the placement of shower mixers and showerheads. Shaynna Blaze emphasizes the importance of having shower mixers located close to the showerhead. Instances where mixers were placed on an opposite wall to the showerhead were criticized for making it inconvenient to control water temperature and flow without getting wet. Similarly, the placement and size of shower niches are critical for practical use, ensuring they are easily accessible for items like shampoo and soap. Scott Cam underscored that for a room used daily, functionality must be paramount. Another practical consideration is the choice between towel racks and hooks. Judges, particularly Shaynna, strongly advocate for towel racks over hooks, especially in sufficiently sized bathrooms. Towel racks allow towels to dry properly and are less prone to towels falling off, contributing to a tidier and more hygienic bathroom environment. The decision by Tanya and Vito to use hooks instead of racks in their spacious main bathroom was met with criticism for these functional drawbacks. The inclusion and placement of a toilet are also significant. Tanya and Vito's decision to omit a toilet from their large main bathroom, opting for a separate powder room described as a long corridor, was deemed impractical by the judges. In contrast, Mitch and Mark received praise for discreetly positioning their toilet behind the door in their main bathroom. This placement ensures the toilet is not the first thing seen upon entering, maintaining the luxurious aesthetic of the space while still providing essential functionality. Storage is another vital element, particularly face-level storage. Features like mirrored cabinets above the vanity offer practical storage for daily essentials, keeping surfaces clutter-free without consuming excessive space. Shaynna consistently checks for this type of storage, recognizing its contribution to a highly functional bathroom. Lighting around the vanity and mirror is crucial for daily routines such as makeup application and shaving. Judges commended Ronnie and Georgia's lighting scheme, which prioritized effective illumination in front of the mirror, noting that less direct light is often more flattering. Natural light is also considered ideal where possible. Finally, when incorporating a theme into bathroom design, subtlety is advised. Kirsty and Jesse's attempt to evoke beachside vibes with gold shell accessories, in addition to a soft powder blue color palette, was criticized for being excessive. The judges felt the color palette alone was sufficient to convey the theme, and the additional accessories made the design appear more like a set than a stylish, cohesive space. This highlights the importance of moderation to avoid an overly thematic or kitschy appearance. #BathroomRenovation #InteriorDesign #TheBlock #HomeImprovement #StylingAdvice #TileSelection #Functionality #StorageSolutions #LightingDesign #BathroomRenovation #InteriorDesign #TheBlock #HomeImprovement #StylingAdvice #TileSelection #Functionality #StorageSolutions #LightingDesign
