5 Design Trends Interior Designers Can't Wait to Say Goodbye to in 2025

As 2025 approaches, certain interior design and home trends are predicted to fade out, making way for new aesthetics and functionalities. Experts foresee the long-standing all-white kitchen trend, which has been gradually declining, finally becoming obsolete. Interior designers and home experts have identified five specific trends they anticipate disappearing and offer insights into why these shifts are occurring, along with alternative ideas for updating spaces. One significant trend on its way out is the widespread use of gray tones in home interiors and exteriors. While gray previously served as a warmer alternative to stark white, its ubiquity, particularly in modern farmhouse styles, has diminished its appeal, making it feel dated. Designers suggest moving towards bold, warm colors like beige and various wood tones to introduce more inviting hues into living spaces. For exteriors, the once-popular gray siding is being replaced by a sophisticated combination of black, white, and wood. The all-white kitchen, a dominant feature for the past decade in styles such as modern farmhouse and cottage, is also declining in popularity. This trend typically involved white cabinets, subway tile, quartz countertops, and a white sink. While still favored by some homeowners, kitchen designers note a growing demand for color. Jon Cummins of Kitchen Solvers observes a shift towards softer shades of blue and green, and a resurgence of stained wood finishes in both light and dark tones. Many contemporary kitchen renovations now feature a blend of stained wood cabinets, often on kitchen islands, paired with matching hoods, reflecting a desire for more expressive and warm kitchen environments. Outdoor spaces are also undergoing a transformation, with single-color patios being replaced by designs that incorporate multiple textures and colors. Joe Raboine, Vice President of Design at Oldcastle APG, highlights a move towards mixing materials such as wood, metal, glass, and gravel to enhance the visual appeal of outdoor living areas. This approach views color and texture as integral to modular design, allowing for the integration of smaller, distinct spaces into a larger, cohesive outdoor environment. This creates depth and dimension, seamlessly connecting outdoor areas with either the home’s interior or the surrounding landscape. The walk-through laundry room, typically situated as an entryway from the garage that requires passing through to access the main house, is another trend losing favor. This design often leads to issues with space utilization and the tracking of dirt. Brian Juedes, Vice President of Product Design at Taylor Morrison, points out that contemporary laundry rooms are now predominantly located on the same floor as the primary suite and are designed as separate, self-contained rooms. An optimized mudroom is considered a more effective solution for garage entryways, addressing concerns about dirt and grime accumulation, which are incompatible with the desired cleanliness of laundry spaces. Finally, single-use outdoor spaces are giving way to versatile, multipurpose areas. The pandemic has increased the demand for homeowners to maximize their outdoor living areas. This has led to the development of outdoor patios that serve multiple functions, such as entertainment zones for games, areas equipped with TVs, and grill spaces transformed into full outdoor kitchens. Raboine notes that patios are evolving beyond simple fire pit areas to become outdoor dining rooms that can even function as workspaces. Additionally, paved garden areas are being utilized for activities like yoga or other outdoor workouts, emphasizing adaptability and utility in modern outdoor living. #InteriorDesignTrends #HomeDecor #KitchenDesign #OutdoorLiving #LaundryRoomDesign #ModernFarmhouse #ColorTrends #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesignTrends #HomeDecor #KitchenDesign #OutdoorLiving #LaundryRoomDesign #ModernFarmhouse #ColorTrends #HomeRenovation
