Architectural designer Mila Morris and furniture builder Jøna Maaryn collaborated to transform an old ranch in Yucca Valley, California, into a stunning desert retreat known as Le Chacuel. This three-bedroom, three-bathroom property, spanning 2,800 square feet, combines renovation and new construction, offering a minimalist aesthetic with nature-inspired colors. The home is available for rent on Airbnb when the owners are traveling. The renovation, initiated by Mila Morris in late 2018, involved a complete gutting of the existing structure. Interior walls were removed, relocated, and new walls were added. Windows were repositioned and new ones installed to maximize natural light, while doors were rearranged to improve traffic flow. A primary goal was to create more communal spaces and expand bedrooms and bathrooms, with only the exterior studs of the original ranch being retained. Mila opened up the living room's low ceilings, exposing the trusses and coating all surfaces with white paint to create an expansive feel. The interior furnishings were a collaborative effort between Mila and Jøna. Jøna’s sleek designs for items like barstools, sling chairs, table bases, and benches incorporate materials such as brass, leather, powder-coated steel, and hand-poured concrete. The Vikasa Yoga Retreat on the Thai island of Ko Samui is known for its rustic aesthetic. However, when founder Kosta Miachin decided to open a studio in Bangkok, he sought a design that would blend the retreat's meditative qualities with the urban pulse of the city. The new facility, Vikasa on 24, located in the Sukhumvit neighborhood, occupies the second floor of a concrete, steel, and glass building originally intended as a showroom for luxury apartments. Miachin enlisted Australian architect Patrick Keane of Enter Projects Asia to create a non-traditional, immersive, and holistic space. Keane, a Princeton University School of Architecture graduate, has extensive experience in Thailand and a long-standing interest in rattan as a building material. To transform the conventional structure, Keane introduced a series of sinuous rattan tubes that weave through the interior, at times expanding overhead like clouds. He describes this intricate network of biomorphic pipes as a "material guide to the space," emphasizing its dynamic and almost sentient quality. These tubes connect different areas of the studio during the day, and at night, illuminated by LEDs, they become vibrant neural pathways, channeling energy and becoming visible from the street below. The design process involved high-tech digital tools such as Maya and Rhino, typically used in special effects and automotive manufacturing. Keane's team approached the space as a rigid container into which they could introduce a fluid material capable of assuming any shape. Inspired by the Klein bottle, a mind-bending geometric object resembling a 3D Möbius strip where the exterior turns inward, Keane aimed to create a design that reflects the introspective and transformative nature of yoga. The concept of an external surface becoming an interior resonates with the yogic journey of internal transformation manifesting externally. The rattan tubes commence as a bulbous, synapse-shaped lantern above the entry staircase, then traverse the reception area ceiling before descending to form a fluid front desk and bench. Two large yoga studios flank the reception area, each enveloped in a wood shell with a palm-leaf thatch exterior, evoking a sense of rural Thailand. Inside, rattan tubes loop and float overhead, reminiscent of Isamu Noguchi light sculptures. These tubes then extend through the walls, expanding dramatically to form bower-like wicker enclosures that serve as smaller, private yoga studios, skillfully mimicking the Klein bottle's self-enveloping form. Despite the advanced digital design, the materials used are deeply rooted in Thai craft traditions. The large yoga studios feature curved walls and ceilings clad in shiplap-style teak marine plywood, sourced from local boatbuilders. The locker rooms balance functionality with warmth, incorporating honed-slate flooring, gray cement walls, and custom teak benches handcrafted by Bangkok-based carpenter Ian Sykes. Keane noted the project effectively became a design-and-build endeavor, fostering a permanent team of artisans. Finding skilled craftspeople to execute the complex rattan designs proved challenging, particularly due to the prevalence of synthetic rattan. The project's realization was made possible by Supinya Colin, a French-Thai director of a company specializing in handmade, mostly synthetic, rattan furniture, who was willing to work with natural rattan. This architectural project integrates rental offices, a private studio, and a family home, demonstrating how urban living can maintain a strong connection to natural elements despite its density. The design directly addresses Bangkok's challenging climate, characterized by intense sunlight and heavy monsoon rains, by incorporating features that maximize natural ventilation and daylight penetration. The vertical organization of P Home is central to its design. Parking facilities are located on the ground floor. The second level and its mezzanine are dedicated to office spaces. The residential areas, encompassing the third floor and an upper mezzanine, are distinctly separated yet seamlessly integrated through thoughtful design. Circulation paths within the building are carefully choreographed to create transitions and moments of openness. In Fishers, Indiana, Daniel and Lucy Neely embarked on a significant home transformation, ultimately deciding to demolish their 1970s residence and build a new, contemporary home. Their inspiration came from Höweler + Yoon Architecture’s Bridge House in McLean, Virginia, which they discovered in Dwell magazine. Impressed by the design, they met with Eric Höweler, co-founder of Höweler + Yoon, and, after touring the Bridge House, engaged his firm to design their new home. The Neelys' six-acre parcel in Fishers' Forest Knoll neighborhood presented natural features, including mature trees and an existing pond, which they wished to integrate into their new home's design. Functionally, the family of five needed individual spaces for their three daughters and a design that would allow for comfortable aging in place. The Höweler + Yoon team proposed a cruciate, or plus-shaped, form for the house, intended to organize the surrounding landscape. Each of the four wings of the plus-shaped home is aligned with a cardinal direction, with the western exposure offering dramatic two-story views of the property's pond. The design ensures that each wing has its own orientation and views, effectively framing the landscape. The kitchen is centrally located where the two intersecting volumes of the 'plus' overlap. The first floor accommodates a living room, dining room, primary bedroom suite, and an entry foyer with a powder room and gym. The upper floor contains three en suite bedrooms for the daughters. While the home’s form was quickly decided, selecting the exterior cladding required more consideration. The Neelys sought a material that was low-maintenance, durable, and visually striking. After exploring options like limestone, corten steel, fiber cement panels, and stucco, the architects introduced yakisugi, a charred wood siding. Although unfamiliar with it, the Neelys were drawn to its natural protective qualities and dramatic aesthetic. They chose Nakamoto Forestry for its sustainably sourced, heat-treated wood, known for its resistance to fire, fungi, and water, its rich texture, and reliable lead times. Nakamoto Forestry's authentic Japanese yakisugi, made from sugi, appealed to the team due to its deep heat treatment, distinguishing it from cosmetically charred or chemically treated alternatives. The project utilized a combination of Nakamoto Forestry’s Suyaki® Tung Oil Black, and Gendai® in both Alkyd Light Gray and Alkyd Black, to create subtle variations in texture and color. The Suyaki, an unbrushed yakisugi, features a tung oil finish with black pigment, enhancing its color saturation and contributing to a bold, 'blacker-than-black' appearance. The architects noted that the material's availability in North America from Nakamoto Forestry simplified the construction process. The Neelys have since appreciated how their home interacts with its environment. The jet-black exterior creates a striking contrast that accentuates seasonal changes, from the vibrant green of spring and summer to the autumnal hues and the brilliant white snow of winter. The architects conceptualized the structure in a cross shape, strategically integrating multiple gardens and water features around it. This design approach aims to enhance ventilation and seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living spaces, contributing to the project's evocative name. The design prioritizes climate responsiveness, particularly addressing Ahmedabad's intense light and heat.
