concrete residence with integrated yoga studio weaves around yucatan's endemic trees

Garrido Lizarraga Arquitectos introduces Casa Zen, a concrete structure in Mérida, Mexico, that serves as both a family home and a yoga studio. The design prioritizes integration with the natural environment, featuring large windows that establish a connection between the interior living spaces and the surrounding landscape. The architectural palette of exposed concrete, polished cement floors, and black-framed windows contributes to a serene atmosphere, allowing the natural elements to become the focal point of the design. A key aspect of the project was the client's request to preserve the existing trees on the property, which led the architects to develop a layout that carefully navigates around these endemic trees. The entrance to the house is marked by a tall, double-height portico, while a more secluded portico provides access to the yoga studio, subtly differentiating the two functional zones. Central to Casa Zen's interior design is a double-height space featuring a curved bridge. This bridge serves as a connective element, linking the dining room and kitchen on one side with the family room and bedrooms on the first floor. This central area is designed to be the heart of the home, promoting interaction and offering dynamic visual experiences through variations in light, shadow, and spatial heights. The overall simplicity of the home's design ensures that the trees and the play of natural light significantly influence the interior aesthetics, effectively transforming the walls into a canvas reflecting nature's presence. The preservation of 45 endemic trees on the site is a crucial environmental consideration. This approach by the Mexican firm Garrido Lizarraga Arquitectos not only helps in reducing the local temperature but also supports the native wildlife, including various bird species like parrots and hummingbirds. The design emphasizes floor-to-ceiling openings that allow ample light to penetrate the spaces while providing continuous views of the landscape. The neutral material palette, comprising exposed concrete and polished cement, contributes to a tranquil and reflective environment. The central double-height space is instrumental in fostering family interaction, while the dynamic interplay of light and shadow is enhanced by the large windows and tall concrete walls. A smaller, more intimate portico leads to the yoga studio, further reinforcing the sense of being immersed in nature. Expansive windows throughout the residence ensure a free flow of natural light, and an outdoor terrace offers a peaceful space for residents to engage with the natural surroundings. The concrete walls of Casa Zen are designed to blend harmoniously with the natural landscape, ensuring that the environment remains the primary focus and creating a serene setting for both daily living and yoga practice. #CasaZen #ConcreteArchitecture #YogaStudio #Yucatan #SustainableDesign #ArchitecturalIntegration #EnvironmentalPreservation #GarridoLizarragaArquitectos #ResidentialArchitecture #CasaZen #ConcreteArchitecture #YogaStudio #Yucatan #SustainableDesign #ArchitecturalIntegration #EnvironmentalPreservation #GarridoLizarragaArquitectos #ResidentialArchitecture
