You Don’t Need Plastic Organizers to Tidy Up Your Kitchen

The kitchen, a central hub in any home, often accumulates an array of items, from bulk-stocked groceries to frequently used spices and appliances, leading to clutter. Achieving an organized kitchen doesn't necessarily require investing in numerous plastic bins and dividers. Professional organizer Jen Robin of Life in Jeneral offers practical strategies to bring order and maintain organization without relying on less environmentally friendly plastic solutions. For kitchen cabinets, the key is to maximize vertical space, regardless of their depth or width. Robin suggests incorporating risers, which act as additional shelves, to utilize the height of the cabinets more effectively. For larger cabinets, using bins can help contain items like cans or jars, making them easily accessible. Glass jars are highlighted as an excellent choice for bulk storage due to their airtight properties, which help extend the shelf life of food. To keep track of expiration dates and cooking instructions, these details can be cut from original packaging or printed with a label maker and affixed to the back or bottom of the glass containers. Drawer organization benefits significantly from the use of dividers. The concept of containment is central here, as it establishes a system and process for maintaining order. Bamboo drawer dividers are recommended for neatly filing snacks, and pre-sectioned organizers are ideal for utensils. If extra drawer space is available, especially near the oven, it can be utilized for spices. An added touch for spice organization includes color-coding, though alphabetizing is another common method, both of which can enhance the cooking experience. Pantry organization is best approached by creating distinct zones. Heavy or less frequently used items like small appliances should be placed on lower shelves. Items used regularly, such as daily essentials, should occupy the 'prime real-estate zone'—front and center—for easy access. The specific types of zones can be customized based on household needs, such as dedicated areas for children's snacks, allergy-specific foods, or breakfast, lunch, and drink categories. When selecting containers for the pantry, it's advisable to limit the variety of materials and colors to two or three maximum to maintain a cohesive aesthetic. While both aesthetics and functionality are important, functionality should always be the priority in organizational choices. #kitchenOrganization #homeOrganization #decluttering #sustainableLiving #storageSolutions #kitchenDesign #pantryOrganization #drawerOrganization #cabinetOrganization #kitchenOrganization #homeOrganization #decluttering #sustainableLiving #storageSolutions #kitchenDesign #pantryOrganization #drawerOrganization #cabinetOrganization
