Seven of the loveliest Japanese gardens in the UK

The British-Japanese Exhibition of 1910 significantly influenced garden design in the UK, leading to the creation of numerous Japanese-style gardens across the country. These gardens, often found on stately home estates or as standalone attractions, feature East Asian foliage that becomes particularly vibrant in autumn. Japanese gardens are meticulously designed, with every element, from leaves to rocks, having symbolic meaning. They often exhibit asymmetry, incorporate blank spaces, include audible water features, and harmonize natural and man-made elements such as bridges and pavilions, often set against cascading trees. One such notable garden is The Japanese Garden at Cowden in Clackmannanshire, a seven-acre oasis inspired by Isabella Christie's 1908 trip to Asia. It features fiery-red Japanese maples and delicate pines reflected in a boulder-framed pond. Originally created with the help of a Japanese horticulturalist, the garden was restored after a period of neglect and now includes a woodland trail and a tearoom. Nearby accommodation is available at Broomhall Castle, approximately 20 minutes away, with Edinburgh an hour's drive. In St Mawgan, Cornwall, The Japanese Garden is a compact, one-acre site known for its koi carp ponds, acer trees that change color in autumn, spring azaleas, and year-round bamboo. This garden is designed to be largely wheelchair-accessible with gravel and stone paths. Visitors can find lodging at the Bedruthan Hotel & Spa, a ten-minute drive away, and explore the nearby clifftop trail between Mawgan Porth and Watergate Bay. Tatton Park in Knutsford, Cheshire, boasts an opulent Japanese garden developed after a young baron visited the 1910 British-Japanese Exhibition. This garden incorporates elements of a Shinto shrine and other Japanese artifacts. The expansive Tatton Country Park also houses farm animals and a playground, while the Japanese garden itself features thatched archways, ponds with islands, maple foliage, stone pathways, heron statues, and an almond eye bridge. The Mere Court Hotel provides accommodation and is conveniently located near Chester Zoo. London's Holland Park is home to the Kyoto Garden, designed by Shoji Nakahara. This tranquil space is characterized by a magnificent water cascade, koi carp, stone lanterns (toro), and peacocks. It is particularly striking during spring with cherry blossoms and in autumn with changing leaves. The Ruby Zoe hotel offers an affordable stay within walking distance of Portobello Road market and Notting Hill’s colorful townhouses. Kingston Lacy in Wimborne, Dorset, features a Japanese tea garden conceived by Henrietta Bankes, the lady of the manor. It includes bamboo, acer maples, a rockery, and a reflection pool. Managed by the National Trust since 1982, the garden hosts events, including tours by the head gardener and tea tastings. Over 100 Japanese cherry trees were planted in 2021 to commemorate UK-Japan friendship. The Crown Hotel in Blandford Forum is a recommended place to stay, providing access to Corfe Castle and the Blue Pool nature reserve. The Japanese Garden at Newstead Abbey in Ravenshead, Nottinghamshire, is part of Lord Byron’s ancestral estate, featuring various themed gardens. The Japanese section, designed in the early 20th century by two sisters and a Japanese landscape architect, includes a pond, stone lanterns, bridges, and waterfalls, surrounded by bamboo groves, Japanese maples, azaleas, and katsura trees. Langar Hall, a historic country house hotel, is a 40-minute drive southeast for those seeking overnight accommodation. Finally, Barnsdale Gardens in Oakham, Rutland, created by former 'Gardeners’ World' presenter Geoff Hamilton, showcases Britain’s largest collection of individually designed gardens. Its Japanese garden includes a decorative bridge, rock displays, and a cherry blossom tree, offering a serene experience alongside other themed gardens like the Mediterranean and Land’s End. The Rutland Hall Hotel is a nearby option for visitors interested in birdwatching and walks around the reservoir. These gardens collectively offer a diverse representation of Japanese horticultural aesthetics across the UK. #JapaneseGardens #UKTravel #GardenTourism #Horticulture #TravelDestinations #CulturalExchange #HistoricGardens #AutumnFoliage #JapaneseGardens #UKTravel #GardenTourism #Horticulture #TravelDestinations #CulturalExchange #HistoricGardens #AutumnFoliage
