These Are The Most Breathtaking Japanese Gardens In The U.S.

Japanese gardens have gained considerable popularity globally, particularly during spring due to the blooming cherry blossoms (Sakura). While Japan itself becomes a major draw for tourists during this period, and in autumn for leaf-peeping, the United States offers a diverse collection of impressive Japanese gardens, allowing travelers to experience their beauty without international travel. This article highlights ten of the most stunning Japanese gardens across the U.S. that can be visited throughout the year. The Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco, California, is noted for its beauty in spring and fall, as well as its architecture. It boasts high ratings on TripAdvisor, offering both guided and self-guided tours. Further north, the Seattle Japanese Garden in Washington, designed by landscape artist Juki Iida, has been a popular destination since 1960. It showcases a blend of Japanese and Pacific Northwest flora, with specific rules regarding picnics, drones, tripods, and pets to maintain its tranquility. Oregon is home to the Portland Japanese Garden, a 12-acre site featuring eight distinct garden styles, an authentic Japanese Tea House, meandering streams, and views of Mt. Hood. This garden, established in 1963, has been lauded by former Japanese Ambassador Nobuo Matsunaga as one of the most authentic outside Japan. In Ball Ground, Georgia, Gibbs Gardens stands as the largest Japanese garden in the U.S., spanning 376 acres and housing diverse species like weeping willows, cherry trees, and Japanese maples. Founded by Jim Gibbs after 15 years of global garden research, it prohibits outside chairs, pets, and food, offering designated picnic areas. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden in New York, a 52-acre site, is celebrated for its festivals and events. Designed by Takeo Shiota in 1915, it remains visually stunning in autumn, featuring numerous maple trees and other Japanese species. Admission is charged for adults, seniors, and students, with children entering free. In Rockford, Illinois, the Anderson Japanese Gardens consistently receives high ratings, known for its waterfalls, walkways, streams, and koi ponds. It is recognized as one of North America's top Japanese gardens and hosts cultural events. The Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, Missouri, established over 160 years ago, is a National Historic Landmark and one of the world's most impressive gardens. Spanning 79 acres, it is recommended for a full-day visit. Florida's Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens comprises six gardens inspired by famous Japanese designs, such as the Karensansui Garden and Shinden Garden. It features bonsai collections and a traditional tea house, aiming to promote Japanese cultural experiences through various programs. Admission fees apply, with discounts for children. The Japanese Friendship Garden in Phoenix, Arizona, offers a rich array of Japanese trees and hosts cultural events like the Otsukimi Full Moon Viewing Festival and Children's Day. It serves as a popular location for various photo sessions. Admission fees vary by age group. Finally, the Elizabeth Hubert Malott Japanese Garden, part of the Chicago Botanic Gardens in Glencoe, Illinois, evokes a historical ambiance with moss-covered rocks and weathered pine trees. It provides a year-round experience, with the seasonal color changes adding to its appeal. #JapaneseGardens #UnitedStatesTravel #BotanicalGardens #TravelDestinations #CulturalExperience #SpringBlossoms #AutumnFoliage #TravelGuide #JapaneseGardens #UnitedStatesTravel #BotanicalGardens #TravelDestinations #CulturalExperience #SpringBlossoms #AutumnFoliage #TravelGuide
