This "trend-defying" kitchen color could make your home sell for thousands of dollars more, say experts

Traditional advice for selling a home often suggests using light, bright, and neutral paint colors to appeal to a broad range of buyers. However, recent data from Zillow challenges this conventional wisdom, indicating that homes with dark grey kitchens could command significantly higher selling prices, potentially increasing a home's value by as much as $2,512. In contrast, white kitchens might paradoxically lead to a decrease in home value by approximately $612. This finding is particularly noteworthy given that grey has somewhat fallen out of favor in general color trends. Despite this, its impact on property value suggests a deeper psychological appeal. Experts, such as New York-based color psychology specialist and interior designer Mehnaz Khan, explain that dark grey evokes a sense of retreat and security. In a post-pandemic world, where individuals often seek refuge from external pressures, rooms enveloped in dark grey can provide a comforting and secure environment, a quality highly valued by potential buyers. To effectively leverage dark grey in a kitchen for increased home value and a modern aesthetic, several design considerations are crucial. Firstly, selecting the correct undertone for dark grey paint is paramount. Deeper, moodier grey tones tend to appear more sophisticated than mid-tone shades. Crucially, opting for dark greys with rich, warm undertones—such as hints of olive green, brown, or burgundy—can make a kitchen feel more luxurious and expensive. These complex shades, which can appear different under varying light conditions, add intrigue and opulence, directly contributing to increased perceived value. Secondly, incorporating warming touches is essential to prevent a dark grey kitchen from feeling cold or stark. While chrome or stainless steel accents can exacerbate a cool aesthetic, aged brass provides an excellent alternative, introducing warmth and character. Other natural elements like raw woods, natural stone, artisanal ceramics, and terracotta can also soften the intensity of dark grey, making the space more inviting and contemporary. Finally, careful consideration of contrast is vital. Avoiding harsh contrasts, such as pairing dark grey with bright white countertops, can significantly enhance the kitchen's overall appeal. Instead, natural or stone-effect countertops featuring grey tones can create a softer, more cohesive look. This principle extends to all color choices within the kitchen, aiming for a tonal scheme that blends seamlessly. An example cited is a kitchen design by Unique Kitchens & Baths, which uses grey-veined marble for a gentle contrast, a dark-toned wood island, and a floor that harmonizes with the grey cabinetry. Even the walls are painted in an off-white shade, ensuring the entire scheme is unified and sophisticated, ultimately contributing to the home's market appeal. #KitchenDesign #HomeValue #DarkGreyKitchen #InteriorDesignTrends #ColorPsychology #HomeSelling #PropertyValue #KitchenCabinets #DesignTips #KitchenDesign #HomeValue #DarkGreyKitchen #InteriorDesignTrends #ColorPsychology #HomeSelling #PropertyValue #KitchenCabinets #DesignTips
