Couch colors to avoid – and what designers are recommending instead
The article discusses the importance of choosing the right couch color, as it significantly influences the overall aesthetic of a living room. It highlights certain couch colors that interior designers suggest avoiding and recommends alternative choices that are currently trending or considered timeless. The main colors to steer clear of are dark and medium gray, as well as highly saturated bright colors such as red, yellow, and pink.
Interior designers Jenna and Mariana from Interior Fox, along with Kate Keyser of Ivy Lane home staging company, advise against dark and medium gray sofas. They describe these colors as "cold" and capable of making a home feel "techie." Instead, a shift towards warmer tones is noted, with a predicted resurgence of mid-century modern trends in 2023, featuring wood paneling and rich, warm colors. For those who still prefer gray, paler shades or blue-gray tones are recommended to create a more soothing, warm, and inviting atmosphere, aligning with a coastal aesthetic.
The article points out that the quality of the material can impact how well dark or medium gray works in a living room design. While gray may be associated with more utilitarian spaces, accessories can be used to soften the look by highlighting its undertones. For a pared-back and minimalist style, off-white and light beige are suggested due to their versatility in complementing other colors. Interior Fox designers also foresee a transition from saturated jewel tones to muted, rich, woodland-inspired colors such as lichen, moss, and various shades of brown. Muted purples and other warm tones are expected to dominate interiors, alongside a trend where the couch color matches the wall behind it.
Grace Baena, an Interior Designer at Kaiyo, suggests moving away from neutrals in 2023 in favor of statement colors like green or blue, which have been gaining popularity. Conversely, Raquel Kehler, an interior designer at Room Crush, advises against brightly colored couches in red, yellow, and pink. She argues that while these colors add energy, they make it challenging to create a cohesive scheme, often necessitating strictly neutral décor and walls. Instead, she recommends tan brown or soft sage green, which offer greater flexibility for future changes in other furniture and decor elements. Vibrant colors, if desired, should be incorporated through smaller statement pieces like art or throw pillows rather than the sofa itself.
For a universally appealing couch color, Raquel Kehler expresses her preference for white bouclé sofas. She notes their ability to add texture and provide a timeless look that harmonizes with both modern and vintage-inspired interior design styles. She also suggests curved sectionals in neutral or soft colors like white, tan, or sage green as versatile choices.
