Beyond physical safety, awareness of chemical hazards and general competence for a task are paramount. Many DIY enthusiasts, despite having enthusiasm and access to information, may lack the practical skills or understanding to safely complete certain projects. For instance, tasks like roofing, beyond simple gutter clearing, are generally best left to professionals. Mixing common household chemicals like bleach with ammonia or rubbing alcohol can produce toxic gases, leading to severe respiratory issues. Even seemingly benign tasks like painting or working with drywall require caution; proper ventilation is necessary even with low-odor paints, and breathing in drywall dust can cause significant respiratory damage.
