This elegant Texas home uses marble in every single room – it's as luxurious as it sounds
This blog post explores a comprehensive remodeling project in Highland Park, Dallas, Texas, transforming a fixer-upper for a family of seven. The renovation focused on a house design that blended West Coast aesthetics with Texas style, resulting in a warm and inviting space. Interior designers Suzanne Hall and Jessica Bennett of Alice Lane Interior Design spearheaded the project, making extensive use of marble and stone finishes throughout the home to create a luxurious yet practical environment.
Key to the kitchen's design is the use of white Macaubas quartzite for island and preparation surfaces. This material was chosen for its striking appearance, harmonious blending with dark green cabinetry, and practical benefits such as durability, density, and resistance to spills, making it a low-maintenance option for a busy family kitchen. The designers emphasized selecting materials intentionally, allowing the stone to guide other design decisions.
To enhance the stone's visual appeal, other natural materials and finishes are incorporated, including a contemporary walnut butcher's block by Palmer Industries, which provides a contrasting element to the quartzite. The consistent use of natural materials and colors throughout the home ensures a cohesive and sophisticated aesthetic. Open shelving, also crafted from Macaubas quartzite, contributes to a seamless look, with gold hardware accents adding a touch of luxury. The quartzite's distinctive, contemporary patterning, as opposed to the more fluid lines of traditional marble, was specifically chosen to resonate with the clients' desire for a fresh, modern feel rather than anything overly traditional.
The renovation eliminated a formal dining room in favor of an exquisite dining nook integrated into the expanded kitchen. This practical setup features a round table topped with quartzite, matching the kitchen surfaces, and is adorned with a coco bead chandelier and Italian blue leather chairs, elevating everyday meals into special occasions. In the home office, a marble desk with a spherical base serves as a striking focal point, chosen for its ability to complement the pink and white cabinetry without overwhelming the space. The designers liken the process of selecting stone to art appreciation, emphasizing the emotional connection formed when finding the perfect slab.
The living room maintains a calm ambiance with a pale beechwood coffee table and a warm white sectional, complemented by a marble side table. Natural colors and materials establish a serene backdrop, allowing the natural stone elements to stand out. The powder room features a marble vanity shelf against a gold-veined wallcovering in a deep kelp green, with the lighter marble intentionally selected to prevent the dark room from feeling too heavy. Dramatic veining in the stone adds depth to the custom Porter Teleo wallpaper.
A curved landing above the staircase showcases a beautifully designed cast stone table with ribbed detailing, adding textural richness to the simple space and introducing another dimension of stone usage. Bedroom designs blend traditional and contemporary elements, including a lacquered ceiling and grasscloth wallpaper, which subtly echo the appearance of natural stone. A faux alabaster lamp base serves as a key stone accessory in this room. Finally, the primary bathroom is a highlight, designed around a show-stopping slab of marble chosen by the homeowners. Its dramatic veining frames the brass-framed double shower enclosure, transforming it into a piece of art and solidifying the home's commitment to luxurious stone finishes in every room.
