This Home Office Transformation in Harrison Is a Must-See
The article details the transformation of a dated home office in a Mediterranean-style house in Harrison into a timeless and functional workspace. The remodel was initiated to accommodate the husband's increased remote work during the pandemic, moving away from a previously dark and outdated aesthetic. Designer Ania Dunlop of Home for Zen Interiors spearheaded the project, which involved a significant shift from the home's otherwise modern design.
The initial state of the office was characterized by dark wood paneling and wall-to-wall carpeting, presenting a challenge to the design team. Instead of removing the existing wood paneling, the designer opted to refresh it with a coat of Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy paint, a decision that proved central to the transformation, imbuing the space with a contemporary yet heritage-rich feel. This choice created a masculine yet fresh ambiance, contrasting deliberately with the contemporary design found throughout the rest of the residence, thus adding depth and character to the overall home's narrative.
Key elements of the transformation included replacing the fireplace stone with neutral marble, removing the old carpeting, and refinishing the floors to enhance the room's foundation. A large-scale modern Moroccan rug was introduced to add warmth and texture. The design also incorporated mid-century chairs around the fireplace, creating a distinct 'conversation pit' area. The built-in shelves were styled with a variety of ceramics and objects, contributing to the room's sophisticated and complete look.
The article also provides practical advice for designing a home office, emphasizing several critical factors for both functionality and style. These tips include the importance of a well-positioned desk, ideally floating and facing the entrance to create a welcoming atmosphere. Technical integration is highlighted, stressing the need for accessible power outlets and effective cable management, particularly for floating desks where floor outlets are crucial. Ample storage, preferably custom-built, is recommended to keep clutter at bay and maintain an organized workspace, contributing to mental clarity and productivity. Proper lighting, combining natural light with task and ambient options, is deemed essential for both productivity and aesthetic appeal. Lastly, the article advises on creating a Zoom-friendly background, suggesting elements like art, greenery, wallpaper, or a stylishly arranged bookcase to enhance virtual presence.
