This Boutique Owner's Shelter Island Retreat Is Part Scandi Winter Cabin, Part Beach Cottage

Jennifer Mankins, owner of the indie fashion boutique Bird, along with her husband Niklas Arnegren, purchased a dilapidated Shelter Island home in 2017 that had been abandoned for nearly a decade. Despite extensive damage including mold, standing water, and overgrown greenery, Mankins, with her keen eye for design and previous renovation experience from a Brooklyn brownstone, envisioned a vibrant retreat. She enlisted the help of architect Lisa Ekle of E.G. Projects to transform the property. The original structure's simplicity appealed to Mankins, who sought a low-key year-round escape for family and friends. While the house was gutted to the studs, the original floor plan, featuring a central common area flanked by bedrooms, was maintained. The design philosophy focused on incorporating high-quality materials and adding characterful details. The primary challenge was to blend minimalist Scandinavian aesthetics, influenced by Arnegren's Swedish heritage, with Mankins's eclectic, world-traveled Texan style, a fusion she humorously refers to as "wacky-cool prints. The interior features an airy atmosphere, thanks to double-height windows and an open layout. Neutral, streamlined furniture serves as a backdrop for a diverse array of design elements, including Southwest-inspired modern art, striped light fixtures, woven patterned rugs, and Josef Frank floral roman shades. White oak benches and teak bureaus are adorned with Indian block prints and handcrafted Mexican ceramics. The kitchen showcases ash-wood cupboards and white countertops complemented by a sunset-hued backsplash made of chartreuse, raspberry, salmon, and turquoise tiles. Throughout the home, bold colors appear in glossy yellow side chairs, a floor-to-ceiling blue Heath ceramic tile shower, and mismatched mint and lemon pocket doors. More subtle color variations are present in the cedar-plank walls, which range from pale straw to milk chocolate, depending on the wood grain. The overall aesthetic achieves a harmonious blend of a Scandinavian winter cabin and a beach cottage, maintaining warmth even on cooler evenings, with a functional wall-to-wall white brick fireplace. Mankins's approach to combining disparate elements stems from her lifelong habit of mixing and matching, developed since childhood. Her extensive travels to Mexico, India, and the American Southwest have influenced her understanding of color, shape, and layering. She meticulously collects treasures, from small items like napkins to larger pieces such as rugs and throw pillows, storing them in curated closets for future use. Many of these collected items were integrated into the Shelter Island home's design. For instance, leftover kitchen tiles from her Bird boutique were supplemented with scavenged tiles from other projects to create a unique backsplash pattern. Similarly, extra linen from a Bird x Block Shop collaboration dress was repurposed into an upholstered bench, and Moroccan fabric scraps from a boutique chair became a stool topper. This resourceful repurposing extends to recycled denim wall insulation, Garza Marfa pillows crafted from kilim rugs, and Indian tablecloths from a birthday party serving as master bedroom coverlets. Mankins emphasizes that if she loves something, she finds a way to make it work, highlighting a philosophy of both aesthetic appreciation and practicality. Her bedroom exemplifies this eclectic yet cohesive style, featuring mustard sconces, a cane-back chair, Lars Nilsson striped window treatments, Tamar Mogendorff pink and blush velvet shell pillows, a Les Indiennes blue check duvet, and a boat painting by a hobby artist. Despite the varied elements, the designs achieve harmony. Mankins's decorating process involves fearlessly combining items and then stepping back to assess the result. She notes that when everything is bright and eclectic, nothing singularly stands out, creating a balanced blend. The unifying factor is the personal connection she has with each piece.
