The concept of 'glamping,' a portmanteau of glamorous camping, has emerged to address the desire for outdoor recreation without sacrificing the comforts of modern living. This approach formed the foundation for a multi-unit recreational site designed by the Korean firm Spacetong / Archiworkshop. Situated in the mountainous Ga-Pyeong region, just outside of Seoul, the site carefully integrates its structures within a landscape characterized by pine forests and rocky outcrops. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a welcome center, constructed from black cedar and featuring mirrored sections. This central facility provides communal seating and various amenities that are not included in the individual cabins, fostering a sense of community among visitors. The glamping site offers two distinct cabin designs: 'Rock Flower' and 'Dynamic Triangle'. The 'Rock Flower' unit, characterized by its circular form, draws inspiration from the local biology of the site, specifically the flowers that bloom amidst the boulder-strewn terrain. This design was enlarged and refined to create a hospitable and unique experience for guests. Each 'Rock Flower' unit is equipped with a small veranda, a grilling area, a comfortable bed, an interior lounge space, storage facilities, and a distinctive 1.5-meter circular skylight, which allows for stargazing and a connection with the natural environment. At night, the translucent membrane of the 'Rock Flower' creates a lantern effect, illuminating the surroundings. The second typology, the 'Dynamic Triangle,' evokes the image of a classic camping lean-to shelter. While slightly more modest in size compared to the 'Rock Flower' units, the 'Dynamic Triangle' is designed to encourage guests to spend more time outdoors, which is often considered a primary goal of camping. The reduced interior space is not seen as a limitation but rather as an invitation to engage more deeply with the surrounding nature. The Metal Lark Tower, the first cabin to open at Nordlys Lodging, is situated on a 140-acre property in Frederic, Wisconsin, 90 miles northeast of Minneapolis. The project was conceived by Jeff and Bruce McPheeters, a father-and-son duo who initially envisioned building tiny houses for vacation rentals along the river near their family cabin. The idea evolved into Nordlys Lodging Co., a venture aimed at sharing the natural landscape with visitors through uniquely designed structures. The McPheeters spent nearly two years searching for the ideal location, eventually securing a rural plot boasting a diverse range of biomes, including hills, meadows, a pond, deciduous woods, and granite outcroppings. While initially drawn to Pacific Northwest architectural styles, they recognized the need for designs resilient to Wisconsin’s harsh winters. This material is chosen for its durability and rustic appearance as it develops a patina. Inside, a narrow clerestory window allows daylight to stream in and extends the ceiling, creating a sense of openness. Expansive glass windows, trimmed with Douglas fir from Winnipeg-based Loewen, contribute to the structure's weather tightness while offering panoramic views of the meadow and lake. Douglas fir is used extensively throughout the interior for wall paneling, trim, and ceiling beams, establishing a sleek, uncomplicated aesthetic. The flooring consists of wide-plank engineered wood with a Nordic whitewashed oak finish, complemented by radiant heating. The cabin’s layout includes a comfortable king bed and a luxurious bathroom with immersive nature views. Hidden Murphy bunk beds in the upstairs living space provide additional sleeping capacity. Furnishings, largely sourced from Room & Board, align with a contemporary, Scandinavian-inspired design. The kitchen is equipped with concrete-inspired Caesarstone counters and chef-grade appliances. The McPheeters team emphasizes local sourcing for amenities, including coffee, muesli, and honey, to enhance the guest experience. The second cabin on the property, named Long House, is a linear two-bedroom, two-bath dwelling with rejuvenating lake views. Greater Dog Architects has transformed an existing office building into the Li City Study, a government-sponsored public welfare project situated in the Tianmu Lake Resort of Liyang City, China. This renovated facility offers a 24-hour public cultural space where citizens and tourists can access books for free. The architectural team undertook extensive research into the original structure, focusing on its history and adapting it to its new function while prioritizing sustainability. The renovation aimed to create a cultural venue within a limited innovation framework, respecting the existing building's surroundings, construction methods, and rhythmic framing. The Li City Study complex comprises three above-ground levels and one underground floor. The design incorporates a semi-outdoor entrance set back from the main building and an extended circular traffic flow, effectively separating the interior from the bustling street. During the renovation, the architects removed the exterior walls, exposing the original beams and columns. They also strategically cut the existing floor slabs and integrated new setback circular structural beams on the main facade. This design choice emphasizes the modern aesthetic of the original framework, establishing a harmonious dialogue between the old and new elements throughout both the facade and interiors. Window openings were reconfigured to feature frameless inner curved floor-to-ceiling glass, creating a striking contrast with the solid framed structure and accentuating the building's precise architectural contours. The original building, a matchbox-type house complex constructed between the 1950s and 1960s, required significant alterations and additions to meet the contemporary needs of its occupants. The project aimed to improve the quality of the community and living environment, particularly for young office workers who constitute a significant portion of the area's population. The renovation began with transforming the building's façade, which previously presented an old and dirty appearance. The design team sought to eliminate this negative impression and establish a new benchmark for long-term rental apartment brands. The new façade is intended to enhance the integration of the urban village with the broader city while preserving the local community's cohesion. After extensive research, the architects selected wavy punched aluminum plates to wrap the façade, extending from the atrium's two ends to the exterior. This pattern was chosen to subtly reference the original façade's mosaic splicing while also acting as a semi-transparent layer that visually lightens the building's mass. This reconstructed exterior highlights a deliberate contrast between new and old design languages, fostering a symbiosis among the diverse buildings within the urban landscape, characterized by varying sizes and textures.
